My CLASSICA review!

Recommended Posts

We just returned from the June 2 sailing of the Grand Classica. Having just sailed on the Celebration a month ago, I would like to offer some thoughts and comparisons.

First of all, we had a great cruise. this company does an excellent job on embarkation / disembarkation.

Everything went very smooth, and we really had no problems at all. We had two cabin, one inside and one outside.

The Classica is an excellent ship. I thought the overall condition was very good. The design and layout is definitely 1990. I am a fan of Celebrity, and if you have ever sailed on the Horizon, Zenith, or Century, you would understand the Classica. The cabins were in very good condition, and the bathrooms were very spacious. I like the large vanity countertop. Public areas are in great condition as well. The design of the main theater is odd to say the least, but this cruise line cant help that, they can only work with it. The lounges are very roomy and clean. The whole ship was very clean. I saw nothing that looked worn out.

The food was very good. We ate in the Yellow Elder main restaurant both nights. The service was excellent, much much better than the Celebration. The buffet is also better, with many more options.

We did try A Slice Above. It was very good Pizza!

I am happy to announce that the ice cream machine in the buffet is working!

The crew was outstanding. Everyone seemed very happy, and all were friendly.

The casino was great. I am hoping they add a few more slot machines to fill the area up.

For me, the easiest way to explain the difference in these two ships, is that they were built for different purposes. The Classica , in my opinion, is too nice of a ship for what it is being used for. The Celebration was built for party style cruises, The Classica was built for Voyages. You can see this in things like the Oasis back deck. Its a nice area, but the high wall around it blocks the view and keeps you disconnected from the activity area. On a long cruise, this would be a relaxing quiet place. but on a short active cruise, it was almost unused.

I honestly have no complaints about our trip. We are going back on the Celebration next month, and it will be interesting to "re-compare" the two ships. We hear some complaints and grumbling from some passengers about various things. My opinion is that if you cannot fully enjoy yourself on a $169 cruise, then you need to re evaluate your expectations. I don't know how a cruise line could offer you any more than what they do for the price.

Please feel free to ask away, and I will be happy to answer any questions.

ok, I do have one gripe.....the beverage package hounding was out of control. Next time I will wear a button that says "ALREADT BOUGHT IT!"

Was on the May 29th Classica sailing and agree with Soundsgood. The only thing and probably a good thing, only aprox 500 passengers on are sailing. Times when DW and I only ones in some of the large lounges. Over 100 cruises and never anything like this. Will do this ship again soon. Stormy

Sounds like I’ll be ready to sail on her next year. The reviews are getting better. I totally agree with Stormy as to the comparison to the two ships. They were made for two totally different markets and regions of the world. Thanks for the review.

Stormy,

I agree with the low low number of passengers. I thought that since it was a Saturday sailing, it might be busier, but not the case. I do not know the total pass count, but it was no where near full...…...This is a good and a bad thing to me...….. while I love cruising on a ship that's only half full, I worry about the profitability of the company.

Hopefully they are making money and can keep going with ships at half capacity.

Thanks for the great review..a few questions: Did you have your own A/C control & thermostat and I love the cabin COLD when I sleep..was it cold enough? Also, the shower- was it a removable type ( the kind where you can hold it in your hand & wash..) or the non removable type? Thanks!

Big Al,

The shower is the removeable type, its a very European sprayer, unlike I have seen before...I rather liked it.

the shower is round, and had plenty of hot water. It also drained very well.

As for the a/c, our outside cabin on deck 6 was comfortably cool. Our daughters inside cabin on deck 4 was on the warm side. I thought the whole hallway on deck 4 aft felt warm.

There is a control in the room, but I am not sure if it really did anything. The rest of the ship was comfortable.

Hello,

Any tips for when you get off the boat at the Bahamas? Should we book an excursion or chance taking a taxi? We are just looking to hang on the beach and possibly the straw market.

Thanks in advance

Taxi's are readily available on the pier. They use vans and try to get 10-12 people before to go. They took us to TAINO BEACH. The cost is $14 per person round trip. Taino beach has a $5 entrance fee that included kayaks, paddle boards, changing area, and some water toys. So 2 people will cost about $33.

The ship was selling something similar for $25 per person. HOWEVER...if you want to drink...the ship was offering the same deal with open bar for $75 for two people.

If you are only looking for a walk and some nice thinks to see. Do not take a cab anywhere. A short walk to the Frog pub, Harley Davidson articles, different food, great drinks and a lot of locals selling there items. Professional braiding also available plus most of the time island music playing many familiar songs. When you get off of the ship, just walk down the street to the first parking lot. Walk to your left and enter it. Go to the end and you can then enter the next parking lot just behind the wooden house structure. Just walk to the end of this one and exit at the location where the other ships dock. That is where everything is. A few years back they used to dock there but no longer. They dock on the opposite side, so you need to walk. It would be a great idea for those that sell there to chip in and run a shuttle golf cart back and forth. However, we enjoy a nice walk.

You can hang at the free beach that they don't tell you about. Take a cab to town. Then just walk to the police station. You will see the nice beach. MY son took his son there and they loved it. YOu can spend some money and go to the hotels beach. It is also very nice.

Keep in mind that the port are is ONLY OPEN IF CARNIVAL IS IN PORT ALSO. If you are the only ship there, theses things will all be closed.

We are going on the 22nd, have been on the celebration before but am looking forward to trying this one. How much was the pizza and was it sold by slice? Also do they have any free late night food? Thanks

The late night food was way better on the Classica IMHO. The first night was a taco bar, and it was pretty good.

As for the pizza..

It is a sit down, sort of fine dining experience. 4 of us shared a cheese pizza, and it was $11.50 with the service charge. Extra toppings are $1 or $2. It was very good, and I will do it again. It was enough for each of us to have two small slices as a 10pm snack. They make all the pizza to order. I did not see just slices available. They also offer Calzone and a few other things.

Definitely give it a try.
