New Zealand sweet treats

Recommended Posts

My 15yo is mad on trying snack and sweets from different countries. Whenever we are overseas he has to try some of the local treats, if its chocolate even better.

we are stopping in Aukland, Tuaragura, wellington, akaroa and Dunedin.

Can anyone recomend a specialty store or location that he can try local treats?

He was really bummed when I told him cadbury world had closed.

Thanks maree

The chocolate at Cadbury world was the same as he’d get at hom3 and cost less at the New World (Coles here) over the road. I did get some lollies in a specialty lowly shop. I’ll see if Mrs Gut can remember what port.

Whittakers has some interesting chocolate varieties you can’t buy here. I know he won’t be able to go ashore in Akaroa, but if anyone in your family/group does, there are a couple of shops selling pretty good handmade fudge. There’s a sweet shop in Wellington that sells goodies from all over the world - but can’t remember the name...hopefully some NZ members will have an answer for you.

Don't you Kiwis have some very peculiar chips flavours as well?

You have to try the Hokey Pokey icecream, sold all over NZ in quaint corner shops they call "daries", rhymes with "fairy" and they must have made it because it is that good!

Rather than going to some sort of specialty candy or chocolate store, I suggest you just head to a supermarket for a wider variety of chocolates, many of which will be produced by Cadbury. When we lived in Australia, our kids (and I) loved some of the following Cadbury chocolate goodies:

Jaffas -- orange/chocolate balls covered with a candy coating

Cherry Ripe -- a bar of cherry/coconut covered with chocolate

Curly Wurly -- chewy caramel covered in chocolate

Crunchie -- crunchy honeycomb candy covered in chocolate

I'd take a look at the Cadbury website to find some chocolates which are unique to New Zealand (and Australia).

We do have some unusual chip flavours that can be bought in any supermarket.

Whittakers chocolate is exclusively made in NZ and they also have some unusual flavours. So head to the local supermarket. There is one across the road from Te Papa.

Hokey Pokey icecream is a favorite and is best got from supermarkets in tubs. In Wellington there is also a specialist chocolate store that has some interesting combinations. In Auckland there is Devonport chocolate which is a very specialist chocolate place. If you google either of these places you will be able to check them out before you get here.

Pineappple lumps...yum.

most NZers have moved away from Cadburys, we eat Whittikers now...much better chocolate and some great flavours.

Hokey Pokey Ice-cream is a very NZ thing as is L & P but they have already been mentioned.
