On-Ship Communications App w/ No Internet/Cell Required

Recommended Posts

Hi there, I'm wondering if there is an app that lets people on the ship text/call each other without having to pay for Wi-Fi internet/Cell access (e.g., free local messages using the ship's internal wi-fi without an internet package). There was an iOS app called Ripple that once provided this functionality, but it has since been discontinued.

Any recommendations for a replacement app (preferably iOS)? Thank you.

Princess and Holland are installing system that use the ships WiFi (at no cost) for texting. You still register for WiFi(free) to access the messenger system. The system also lets access other info as well. Text only no voice. The only draw back it doesn't allow notifications and everyone has to sign up. The system assigns the ID for you.

NCL has a system for a minimal cost (about $10 for a week).

Thank you. Do you know if there are any cruise-line agnostic apps? Looking to use this on RCI and Celebrity.

Just curious if the OP checked on the cruise specific boards or if OP looked in the app store.

A wireless connection isn't the same as an internet connection (i.e., the Ripple app allowed texting/calls over the ship's local Wi-Fi connection, even without paying to access the internet).

Bumping this thread to see if anyone has anything helpful to add. Thanks.

Carnival has the same provision...the Carnival Hub app has to be installed on a phone. The nominal charge for the texting feature is $5. per device for the whole cruise.

Obviously there cannot be an app that would work across all cruse lines as there is a credential verification protocol for each cruise line that is unique to that line and ship. Interline cooperation for such a feature is a pie in the sky dream.
