What was your upgrade offer and what did you bid

Recommended Posts

Thanks very much.

Just started bidding on Balcony and Mini-suites on NCL Jade Sept 17th. Reading thru 300 pages on the previous thread was quite interesting but very confusing.

At 80 days should be H4 2 bedroom @ $500 and OS H3 & DOS H2 @ $750 starting bids. Good Luck!

Thanks fingers crossed 😁

waiting for upgrade on Jade, 7/15.......doubt it, but still fun to see.

The trick is to be content with your current stateroom and that way you can be pleasantly surprised by an upgrade rather than relying on it. When I bid my upgrade on the Gem, I just told myself I'd be happy win or lose. If I won, I'd get the better room. If I lost, I'd have the extra cash to spend on board!

I got an offer to bid on the Bliss for September. I booked an inside sailaway. They offered an OV with a minimum bid of $50 and a balcony with a minimum of $75. I don’t care about the OV, but I wouldn’t mind having a balcony. It will be chilly then, so the balcony won’t be that usable. I usually go outside on deck for glacier viewing. Yet, I still bid on a balcony. I’m solo, so I have to pay double. Any thoughts on what a reasonable bid would be?

Bliss sailings have been booked pretty solid, so your chances of an upgrade are, unfortunately, very low. The best answer I can give you is to bid what you are comfortable with. As you mentioned, it's likely to be chilly, so you may not get a ton of use out of the balcony. I won an upgrade from an inside to a balcony for a Canada/New England cruise in early June and I would say my balcony was only really usable about half of the days I was on board. However, the view through the large sliding door was really nice. Since you are paying double, you should definitely factor that into your bid. Bid something reasonable and then don't stew on it. As I said in the beginning, chances for upgrades on Bliss sailings are pretty low at the moment.

Thanks for your thoughts. I agree with everything you said. I’m pretty new to NCL and this bidding thing, but I’m a veteran cruiser. I’ll be happy with my current cabin, but I do like a balcony. I’ll keep my fingers crossed. My friends will have a balcony, so I can visit them.

I have been on over 20 cruises with an inside cabin and am totally happy with it. I have had a chance to upgrade before, but never have. This time, I thought, why not. It is kind of like a horse race, I don't expect to win, but will be happy if I do....or don't.

We just placed a bid on a few Haven suites on the Bliss for a Sept cruise. Got a midship mini-suite. Not holding my breath.

Booked an ocean view this morning on the Gem July 21st. Haven’t received any emails on bidding/upgrading.

You could try logging into My NCL and see if you have the "Let's Get You Upgraded" ad on the main page. When I booked my cruise on the Gem within the 80 day upgrade window, I received my upgrade email the NEXT day.

I just now got the upgrade ”offer to bid” at 68 days out and it is a joke. Prices have fallen so much that a balcony is now only $10/person more than what I paid for an OV. Being that it is after final payment I can’t very well just rebook for that $10/person extra.

Their beginning poor bid is $50/person....yeah, right.

I always book what I want at a price I can live with so it’s a no-brainer. I caution others to not get caught up in the “excitement” this bidding process might make you feel, lol.

thought penalty was waived if you switched to a higher cost room?

Medtech, I've been told you can upgrade with NCL by paying the difference AFTER final payment. Why not give them a call and ask?

Hhhmmm, I’ll call and see after discussing with DH. We have the 170 sq ft. Obstructed OV vs getting another cabin that might be anywhere but with a balcony...

I did this on our upcoming Alaska cruise. We went from a balcony to PH suite for less than the minimum bid. All I did was call and they charged me the difference. Plus I got the extra free at sea promos I would not have gotten if I had bid and won the upgrade. Call them!

Was just awarded 2Bed Haven (H4) for about $1600 USD total, saved about $3k from paying outright. I bid and paid in Canadian $, so can't give exact amounts in USD

While checking prices I noticed the guarantee mini-suites are going for a whopping $650/person more than my OV and I have a lowest bid option of $75/person for a mini. I went ahead and bid that. Lol, we’ll see.

When is your sailing. I have a bid for the Getaway in late August but from what I'm reading I won't hear anything until the week before.

Bliss Sept 1, I am surprised they awarded so early but the Haven is now sold out (every sailing so far, until Sept 8)

Omg I’m on that sailing and I have a bid in. How much if you don’t mind me asking and from what?

So jealous - I had similar bid, I'm in CYPH, whatever that is

probably courtyard penthouse aka H5

Did you book directly with NCL? Their algorithm for assigning upgrades seems to be way more complicated than just $$, would love to see the programming language

Oh, it's still just dollars for sure. But it's total dollars for the entire ship. If taking a low upgrade for one stateroom means they can take a high upgrade for the existing stateroom, the math works out for them. If person A bids $800 to go from an H4 to an H5 and person B bids $1000 to go from an MA to an H5, you might think if it was "just about dollars" that they would take the MA bid. However, if they can only get maybe $200 from someone who bid up to that MA or $600 from someone who bid up to that H5, they will free up the H5 and get a total of $1400. Whereas if they accept person B's bid and then fill their mini-suite, they are only netting $1200. Now extrapolate that out to the whole ship... hundreds of bids and staterooms. Their algorithm is going to figure out how to get the most possible total dollars.

I am in an h5 with a $1600 total bid! But I booked thru an American-based airline’s cruise travel service.

That is approx. $1200 USD at today’s exchange rate. Very interesting that they are already upgrading on the Bliss.

No logic here then. I offered more and it’s the same starting cabin.

Were you also in an H5 to start?

Yes and still am. I booked this end of may if that matters. Two people. Other variables ?

Well, if you were both in the same original category and both bid on the same upgrade category on the same sailing, I really can't guess at what other variables factored into the process. Number of people wouldn't matter, I wouldn't think, since all upgrades are only charged to the first to occupants (or double for single occupants). Since you were all already in the Haven, it's not a matter of having to provide Haven benefits to more or fewer people....

YVR Bass had already converted his bid to approximately USD 1600. USD1200 would be exchanging twice. You may still be in the game. YVR Bass' bid is about the same as yours not less, Erdoran,

Oops! Sorry, missed that. Could be that YVR Bass conversion could make it slightly more than $1600 USD (said it was approx). Even a few dollars difference could knock Erdoran out in that case.

I had already done the exchange from Canadian to US that's why I said about $1600 USD. Bid was $2200 CAD
