No word from SS and the May 25 sailing is still on the books.  Our TA thinks it will be cancelled.  Just a little over a month to go and my optimism is taking a hit.  We'll ride out the storm.  🤪

No we be not.

I went outside by the pool today where it's just glorious.

The sun is lovely and it's spring because you can smell the pine resin,  a yummy earthy smell. The Hawks are circling and calling each other.

The sky is blue and cloudless.

Everything is green and thriving.

It looks just as it did several months ago.

So Ms. Bear, I can understand your confusion. It doesn't look like anything is amiss.

And thanks for checking in. Many of us are still in the cabin.

The pool is warm and I am going in later to begin some hydrotherapy for my knee.

Pretty good. Somebody went to a lot of trouble to put that together.

Yes and it wasn't me.  😀  I am thankful for whoever did!  And thanks zqtchas for providing chuckles as we all slog through this new era in the trials and tribulations of life on planet earth!

I was reading about different items that stores are still seeing flying off the shelves.....the sanitizers, toilet paper and

now it seems hair coloring products are just going really fast....hoping this little gal will help with a smile today as well.

We can all hope to see the rainbow at the end of this journey together.    Mysty, love that one from you too.

A little Saturday night cooking. Braised duck legs over root vegetables. Almost as good as confit, and super-crispy skin!

20200411_162539.thumb.jpg.05e1df37d3edfdcfd66154ff3a11343d.jpg

It was incredibly simple to make. I seared the legs for a few minutes, just with a little salt and pepper. Then I saved enough duck fat to brown the vegetables in the same pan - potatoes, onions, and carrots.

Add 2 cups of broth, return to a boil, and nestle the seared legs back on top, skin side up, with the skin out of the liquid. About 90 minutes in the oven, then it sat for a bit with the oven off.

The longest step was chopping the vegetables. Of course the smell while it was cooking was a killer. We had to go out for a walk while it was cooking, so we didn't do an imitation of Pavlov's dogs.

Lois, thanks, but we just like to eat. Luckily I have figured out how to cook a few things, so Chris keeps me around. Problem is, all that duck fat has calories...

Work is not bad at the moment. I'm on call again this weekend. Covid cases aren't too numerous at our hospital yet, but we definitely have enough to know I really don't want to see more. Getting tired but one more day to go for this week.

We were told to prepare for a surge beginning as soon as Monday. I've spent the last few days giving some of our non-ICU specialists a crash course in how to run ventilators. Once the number of patients ramps up we will need some help with management.

We have built a temporary negative pressure ward in our recovery room, and that will add 5 ICU beds to our capacity come Monday. I toured it today and it looks impressive. They did a nice job in very short time.

So it's potentially going to get busy quickly, statting next week. We don't know whether the extra patients will come from downstate VA facilities (which are very full) or whether they will be civilians (through the VA's fourth mission).

There are only 3 of us who rotate through ICU, so we are considered somewhat valuable these days. They haven't assigned us bodyguards yet, but the current plan is to keep us home and (hopefully) unexposed while we're not working in ICU.

So starting Monday, I should be working from home, doing outpatient telephone visits, electronic consultations, and supporting my colleagues who are at the hospital as best I can. All that can change in a minute, based on staffing needs.

Chris brought a workstation home yesterday and she will be reading radiology studies from home next week too. One day at a time and hopefully we will get through this!
