No network TV on the Horizon

Recommended Posts

That's what YOU like to do on your cruises. I'm a big football fan and like to wager on the games. Having them played onboard while the sun gleams off the deep azure blue sea through a window or my balcony is enjoyable to me......and apparently a few others. FWIW, if it's not football season, watching tv is something I don't do much of on a cruise either.

Who says they don't show football on the ship? Just not in your stateroom.

Who spends their time posting on a TV channel thread when they don’t like watching TV? You can read a book anytime.

:D I too was surprised by all the negative TV watching comments by folks who say they don't like TV anyway.

We enjoy having the TV on while we take turns in the shower and getting ready to go out.

We like seeing the news of the world while munching on our room service breakfasts (and no, we don't count CNN as a new channel - we see it as an opinion network)

We like having it on in the background to mask outside noises from the hallway or thru the walls if we're doing a luscious afternoon nap time.

We don't put folks down who enjoy the hairy chest contests, or who get sloppy drunk drinking at the bars all day and night, or those that drift from food venue to food venue all their waking hours, or those that hog chairs or who sit in hot tubs all day drinking beer all day never getting out to go pee ...... so please get off my cloud about enjoying a TV with a variety of channels in my cabin. ;)

I enjoy TV at home for a football game, etc. But on a cruise, I like to take a break from my normal routine. And watching sports on those small cabin TV's in SD (as compared to a nice 80" UDHD TV) is frustrating at best. So, I for one would not care if they removed every TV from every ship. And watching in the Casino...meh...hate the smoke.

As for background noise...a small bluetooth speaker and the music on my iPhone does a wonderful job...and something I get to control the content 100%. Yeah, not a full-blown old-school music experience, but for BACKGROUND...just fine.

Besides the casino bar, I remember at least two other locations showing the playoffs earlier this year.

We loved the Horizon... but no network TV (CBS , NBC and ABC)? Really Carnival?

You'll find this fleet-wide. Head's up to football/sports fans as your season approaches. Poor decision on Carnival Corp's part IMO. I had a free (casino) cruise that I was supposed to be on this week, but cancelled because NFL pre-season kicks off this week. I got off a New Year's cruise last January and have not set foot onboard since. That's a first for me in a couple decades. I do not like this change.

You'll find it pretty much industry wide. Carnival just adopted what other cruise lines already did.

The casino is one of the places Carnival will likely show football games.

We will be on our 17th cruise soon and we don't vacation for TV, but we watch TV during our down time. Having multiple CNNs and cartoon channels is a terrible selections for us. What I don't understand until and if a deal can be executed, why doesn't CCL add an additional free movie channels. They are already paying for the movie rights.

We watched our Vikings get crushed by the Eagles on the giant lido deck screen during NFL playoffs!

DS is a sports nut nut nut and spent time watching other stuff in the Sports Bar.

This was on the Conquest in January. So the big stuff they show somehow.

On who watches tv on a cruise:

-Some people are so busy in their day to day life that they never have the time to watch so for them, it’s a luxury they usually can’t do.

-A movie lounging in bed is luxurious for some, add room service & your favorite beverage and snuggler.

This is so nice we’ve often missed the end of the movie ;)

-I have 2-3 programs I would like to watch in a week, thank goodness for DVR’s.

-To each their own. For whatever reason, it’s their choice out of many.

You will soon be able to receive just about every channel on your laptop while at sea. The technology exists on Horizon, but the service does not yet exist for single users. Expect to pay about $15 per hour with sports being slightly higher and requiring a full game purchase.

You can't blame Carnival for the loss of networks. They priced themselves off the dial.

Not just Carnival -- other cruise lines have rejected the increased price for network TV stations.

The difference being that Carnival formerly had the 4 networks when the other cruise lines did not. It was a plus for many people, myself included. It is true that Carnival now has far fewer channels like many other cruise lines. they no longer offer a better TV selection.

On the Magic in May and Vista in January, the casino bar and sports bar both had just about any game we wanted to watch. ESPN was on 24/7, as far as I know.

In terms of calling it a "cutback" - look at you cable/satellite bill - and notice that price continues to increase. TV stations/networks are charging more and more for their content. Carnival can't just pick and choose which TV stations/networks they want and put them in every cabin. They have to pay a retransmission fee for every TV on every ship they show each station/network.

Anyone who has Directv and hasn't received a significant discount over the last few years isn't trying. My Directv bill is half of what it used to be for the same package. A Carnival cut is a cut no other way to cut it. ;)

You aren't a commercial customer, but I doubt your bill is less than the introductory price they are giving other residential consumers.

If it is a cut, it is an industry wide cut.

Never seen networks on Princess.

I understand the background noise, at home it's rare for me to not have it on.

On the ship I usually keep it on some channel.

Princess did not have any main networks either, BUT they offered FREE current movies (no extra fees) and there was much more to watch on Princess.....CCL only offer a VERY limited choice. We don't cruise to watch TV either, but we do enjoy hearing a link to the world when getting ready for dinner/evening....to each their own.....and CCL does not provide anything worthwhile to even listen to in our opinions.

Who goes on a cruise to watch TV?

When I have some down time in my cabin, I prefer to read....because that is something I don't get much chance to do at home. And a couple books take up very little luggage space.

You could read at home if you watched less TV...and watching tv takes up zero luggage space.

I don't think anyone goes on vacation to watch tv, but I do spend time in the cabin even if it's not a lot. Also I usually have an interior cabin where there is nothing else to do/look at. Especially when it's getting late and I'm getting ready to go to bed, it's nice to kick back and just watch something mindless for a little bit. There was absolutely nothing to watch last time.

The map channel is pretty mindless. and the camera channels give even those on the inside a view outside.
