One of the times where banking at a large institution is beneficial. I usually get a small amount (around $25 per day) in local currency for those times when I just want a bottle of water or a small snack or wanted to buy something from a street vendor. My bank does charge a fee to bring in currency, but depending on status they give me a bonus back amount that usually exceeds it.

My first trips to Canada and Mexico, I only used local cash, so I took a lot more with me.

On my last two out of country trips I used  a CC from my bank that has no fees  and I've used that in UK/EU with no problems and the bank gave me a favorable exchange rate. I much prefer this method.  Bonus that becuase it was from my home bank I could log in check amounts and transfer funds to cover the purchases in real time so I didn't overspend my budget.
