OCruisers Posted September 17, 2018 #1 Posted September 17, 2018 Do those of you who have been to Black Sand Beaches like them or not? Why????
Rare c-boy Posted September 17, 2018 #2 Posted September 17, 2018 I do. It's a sharp contrast between the black sand and my pale white asz making it easy to spot my carcass on the beach after my wife hits me over the head for saying something stupid.
pseudoware Posted September 17, 2018 #3 Posted September 17, 2018 It's a novelty that wore out fairly quickly for me. I prefer a white sand beach with crystal clear water. Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
Nebr.cruiser Posted September 17, 2018 #4 Posted September 17, 2018 They are interesting to see as something different, but I do prefer nice white sand. Many (not all) black sand beaches ten to have rather coarse sand, as they are usually of volcanic origin.
SRF Posted September 17, 2018 #5 Posted September 17, 2018 They are neat to see. Not so nice to walk on. They get HOT.
cb at sea Posted September 17, 2018 #6 Posted September 17, 2018 So true...fun to look at...terrible for sitting, sunning, walking on...it's hot like asphalt, and not "soft" like most sand....it's little shards of lava...feels like glass.
evandbob Posted September 17, 2018 #7 Posted September 17, 2018 Been on several black sand beaches and very striking visually but I usually need water shoes to walk across the hot sand. Ever play beach color bingo? Blot out a square for each color beach you've walked on - white, yellow, tan, brown, black, pink, and green.
OCruisers Posted September 17, 2018 Author #8 Posted September 17, 2018 Gosh, they always look like dirty sand to me.
Bizmark'sMom Posted September 17, 2018 #10 Posted September 17, 2018 Black sand beaches are great, as long as you keep your reef shoes on.
ilikeanswers Posted September 18, 2018 #11 Posted September 18, 2018 They make the most spectacular pictures but they aren't the most comfortable for beach activities. Still if I find out there is a black beach at my location I always end up visiting it.

Never been to a GREEN sand beach ... but know there is one in Hawaii. Have any of you been to the GREEN Sand beach there?
navybankerteacher Posted September 20, 2018 #13 Posted September 20, 2018 Too hot, and usually coarse and sharp grains. Dramatic, perhaps, but second rate when it comes to providing what a beach is best for. My favorite was the red of Baie Rouge in St. Martin - first seen in 1994 when it really was appropriately named. Somehow it has faded over the years: perhaps due to hurricanes, but it no longer has that brilliant color.
George C Posted September 20, 2018 #14 Posted September 20, 2018 Remember there was in st kits walking distance to jack tar village which we stayed at decades ago
mamkmm2 Posted September 20, 2018 #15 Posted September 20, 2018 They are neat to see. Not so nice to walk on. They get HOT. Very much this. But I have to say, when Hubby and I were in Hawaii over the summer that it was definitely an exciting experience. But if you think white sand beaches get hot, you will literally have roasted feet on black sand. There is no walking on the black sand in places without at least flip flops on. I’m from Florida and i thought i knew the challenges of walking on all types of sand ... uh no. Black sand beaches are a category all to themselves. But it is fun to see the fish and sea turtles on such beaches as well. I have a really fantastic pic that I took of a school of yellow tangs in super clear water right off a black sand beach. Wow.
mamkmm2 Posted September 20, 2018 #16 Posted September 20, 2018 Never been to a GREEN sand beach ... but know there is one in Hawaii.Have any of you been to the GREEN Sand beach there? Green is in the eye of the beholder and how clear the weather is. LOL. The sand is actually green because of the olivine crystals. At least that is the case in the Hawaiian islands. If a storm kicks up a lot of regular sand onto the beach it is less green. The olivine crystals are heavier than your average grain of sand so they stay as the regular sand gets washed back out to the sea. The one of the Big island is small and difficult to get to. When we were there there was also a lot of vog from the volcanic activity. It wasn’t as nice as you see in the post cards ... at least in our experience.
SPacificbound Posted September 21, 2018 #17 Posted September 21, 2018 Seeing black sand beaches is just one of the wonderful things about traveling and seeing the world.

donaldsc Posted September 21, 2018 #19 Posted September 21, 2018 No. But then again, I don't like beaches of any type so my comment is not useful. My maximum beach time before I get bored out of my skull is about 10 minutes. DON
goldenrod Posted September 21, 2018 #20 Posted September 21, 2018 We don’t like beaches period we both grew up in Miami not our thing black sand is worse. If we go someplace we have not been and going to the beach is not seeing the county Sent from my iPhone using Forums
navybankerteacher Posted September 21, 2018 #21 Posted September 21, 2018 Love beaches, but because we live 5 minutes away from one, and an hour or so away from some of the best in the northeast, we usually go for other things on port calls. Of course at Labadee and Half Moon Cay, etc. there isn’t much else.
ilikeanswers Posted September 21, 2018 #22 Posted September 21, 2018 Never been to a GREEN sand beach ... but know there is one in Hawaii.Have any of you been to the GREEN Sand beach there? Yes I visited here when I was in Big Island. It is a pale olive green and quite a small little beach in a cove, you have to walk down a cliff to get on it. But the olivine crystals are all along the stretch of coast. There are piles scattered of pure crystals on the seaside rocks as you make your way to the beach and in the sunlight they look very pretty. Somewhere I read there are only three green beaches in the world and remember one is in Norway but completely inaccessible. When I was in Maui I also visited the red beach. The red is really dirt falling off the cliff into the sea, but next to the blue water it does look amazing.

Nebr.cruiser Posted September 21, 2018 #24 Posted September 21, 2018 We have been to the green sand beach. Very unique and a little hard to get to, but I'm glad we did.
