That's because there are no new posts in that thread. It looks like it only shows the dot/star if there are new posts in a thread you have accessed before.

I haven't figured out the difference between the dot and star yet but I suspect one denotes a thread you have posted in (star?) and the other is a thread you have read but not posted in.

I just discovered that CC seems to be logging me out after a short while of inactivity, and the symbols only show when you're logged in of course.

interesting, doesn't seem to work in the Manage follow content threads though.

They seemed to have fixed the problem with logouts. I've stayed logged in all afternoon.
