Havent seen Lamen Bay, Ouvea Island and i am sure there are others we used to visit often. They all seem to do the usual ones now.

All I can find is a Pacific Aria cruise from Auckland.

P&O (and maybe carnival) only go to Pentecost Island for about a month or two in the middle of winter (about June / July time), its about then they do the land diving.

Lamen Bay??, that is a new one for me, where was that??

No cruises ships visit Ouvea any more, as ether the locals wanted too much money from the cruise lines or the cruise lines where not paying the locals enough, so the locals got upset (cival unrest) and the cruse lines stopped going there.

Wala was another port P&O use to go to (we got to go there once ☺️), but then they stopped going there 😥. I guess for the same reasion as they stopped going to Ouvea.

But I did her that apparently one of the ships dragged its anchor at Wala, which caused some damage and upset the locals. 😥 ( I dont know how true this is, mind you)

I dont think its a question of  not paying the Islanders  enough or the lines not willing to pay , its more a question of what the Island can cope with and accommodate with the resources it has at hand.

The locals on the smaller Islands dont want their homes turned ino a theme park .

The cruise ships are getting too big for many of the Islands

We went to Pentecost Island at the end of April last year on the Pacific Explorer. The first two divers hit the ground head first. Not a pretty sight. The third on was reluctant to take the dive. The singers and dancers at the top try to get the boys "in the mood".

We went there last April as well on the Explorer. We may have been on the same cruise!!!! We departed Sydney on 16 April.

The first couple of divers we saw also hit the ground hard with one young boy being carried away by a couple of elders. My wife and another lady we were sitting with were that upset, they left and went to the beach.

But to answer the OP's question, I thought P&O were the only cruise line to visit that island.  And yes, it was only a couple of cruises per year go there to fit in with the locals and when they do their vine jumping.

Maybe they don't do it anymore from Australia????

G'day Fletech1,

Yes that was the cruise we were on. I did notice a lot of people leave after the first two disturbing jumps.

Either those boys are very brave, very stupid or more likely both.

I think all the males have to go through this to prove/advance to manhood. Part of a culture/ritual thing?

I think I would rather be alive and well than try and prove that I am a man for tourists.
