NCL Sky daily beverage gratuity?

Recommended Posts

We will be on the NCL Sky which fare includes unlimited beverages. I found this in a Cruise Critic article. Will we see a daily gratuity added to our accounts?   You've seen all the pick-your-perk promotions that go on about the freebies you get for booking. Well, it's not really free when you have to pay gratuities, or the credited value doesn't cover full costs. For example, if you choose Norwegian's free Ultimate Beverage Package, you actually have to pay nearly $20 per person, per day, in drink gratuities -- a cost of $140 per person for a seven-night cruise. If you wouldn't have spent that much on drinks in the first place, you'll realize that sometimes cruise sales don't save you money in the end.

On Sky, there is no 20% service charge on the drink package. There IS a higher DSC vs non-inclusive NCL ships...

Norwegian Sky All-Inclusive and Norwegian Sun All-Inclusive.

$22.99 USD per person per day for Suites

$19.99 USD per person per day for all other stateroom types

On the Sky it isn't a "Drink Package"; you couldn't buy the same thing.  When you can buy a package equivalent to the "free" UBP then you have to pay the service charge on the "free" package.

The "cost" of this whole "free" alcohol is built into the cruise fare, which for the Sky is more than an equivalent 4/5 day cruise.

As far as the UBP, the package itself absolutely is free when you choose it for your FAS item.  You pay $0 for the package.

If you choose either the food or the drink package as your FAS items then the original cruise price and any additions that you will see in you confirmatory email will have the 20% Gratuity added to that cost.

You will pay a Daily Service Charge (prepay or onboard)

There is no additional charge for the “open bar”. It is not totally “open” and you won’t get top shelf liquor for free.

We still carry a bunch of $1 bills to provide additional tip to bar waiters and bartenders.

We were on the Sky last year for 4 nights, under $200 for OV.  What a bargain!

that said, we saw almost nobody else "extra tipping" on that cruise.  Like Bird we always carry extra singles.

If something is being offered at a price that is not worth your benefit form that thing then simply do not buy it.  Very basic economics.  You do not have daily gratuities added to your account.  There is however a daily service charge.  It is all explained on the FAQ on the NCL web page. As far as the UBP, the package itself absolutely is free when you choose it for your FAS item.  You pay $0 for the package.  A server still needs to make and serve your drink no matter how you acquires it (purchase individual drink, purchase package, FA package, all inclusive, etc) and thus should be tipped regardless.  If you would rather pay the full price for the package and tip as well, then by all means feel free to do so.  The UBP gratuity is added only if you purchase or FAS the package.

OK...  on The Sky, the entire ship is all-inclusive...  you do not select a FOS package.  There is no choice.

Right now one on the perks you can choose on the Sky is an upgraded beverage package which includes premium drinks. The gratuity that is added is a couple of $ a day( don't remember exactly how much it was). You don't have to choose it or pay the extra few $
