Dawn 1/2/06 review

The Dawn is a beautiful ship. We had a veranda HC cabin on the 10th deck. For port/accessibility info see the review I wrote under the disabled board. Quickly, the Dawn is very accessible, and the HC cabin best we've cruised in (previous cruises HAL, Princess, Costa, Carnival). This was our first NCL cruise, and we loved it.

 

Boarding in NYC was a mess. The ship came in late so people were coming and going. We had arranged through special services for wheel chair assistance. We took a limo from LI and arrived at the pier at 12:30. No wheel chairs were available (they were being used to get people off the ship), NCL staff assisted us to folding chairs and we only waited 15 minutes before a staff person with a wheel-chair assisted us to board. We were in our cabin by 1:15, our scooter awaited us, and off to lunch in the Venetian. Wonderful service, beautiful dining room. Great welcome of things to come.

 

Our cabin was well located and really accessible. Our stewards keep the room clean and neat. They usually appeared to hold the door when my DH struggled with the heavy cabin door. We were impressed at their professionlism - and the towel animals were cute. W e had a mouse, a monkey hanging from the ceiling and an elephant. We lived on the veranda, never sail without one if it fits your budget. We did all our sailways here, toasting eachother, the captain and the ship. We tried one sailaway at the pool. But it was poorly attended, and we enjoyed our private celebrations after spending time ashore.

 

Dining: The food was well prepared and presentation was outstanding. Since this was a 10 day cruise we found ourselvest bored with the lack of varied selections, We ate in Venetian (our favorate) near the windows to the left when u enter. There is a special elevator to access the Venetian for wheel chair -users). Aqua is a beautiful room and the service was outstanding As was Impressions. We always were given a wonderful table and not stuck in the corner. We loved the service, and only had one poor waitress the entire trip. She just couldn't get it together. Lobster night was terrific. The lobster tails were sweet and well prepared. I ordered steak or beef or fish most nights. My DH was looking for lamb (served only one night) and duck (never on the menu) We never saw ribs or rack of lamb. Were told by the reception desk our cruise was first to have the new menu? Oh well, I didn't cook, serve or clean-up. No compliants. The desserts were to die for. We also had double expresso's each night, sometimes two!.

 

Breakfast was served in our cabin. Always the phone call, and then it arrived with a smile and a goodmorning. Ah, what a way to wake up and sit on the veranda and plan our day. I just loved it.

 

We ate in LeBristro (we had the anniversary package) too much food!

But well prepared, presented and served. I had the escargots, onion soup(best I've had that I didn't prepare) spinach salad, filet mignon and the famous chocolate fondue. How I only gained 2 lbs the entire time I can't figure out!!!!!!!!DH had the sea bass. Moist, well prepared and again, a large portion. We're not big eaters , so we never saw the need for multiple portions.

 

The only buffets we did was an occassional breakfast (that is after what was served in our cabin) and one lunch when my DH was having a bad afternoon). He recovered in time for a great dinner at Bamboo. We loved the sushi. There really wan't much of a selection if you really love sushi, but the sushi chef sent over specil goodies, and then made up fresh tuna rolls just the way we love them. We had lunch there one sea day also. Wonderful. Also had my first sockimartini(spel?). powerful stuff. I was happy all afternoon.

 

Spa. I loved it. I had appointments on the first sea day, and while in San Juan, and another later sea day. My DH went once and loved it. He couldn't use the spa pool (no hoist) but he didn't expect it anyway. We spent a bundle (as we planned) this is our special holiday treat for ourselves. The spa staff did not do a high pressure sell, and I relaxed and enjoyed every moment.

 

At our meet and greet the asst hotel director joined us. Her name was Islande (so her business card said) but she told me later her name was Tanja. After inquiring about our cabin, I did mention that everything was perfect for my DH, but the soft couch was removed to make even more room for his scooter. She arranged for a lounge chair to be delivered for me. Late that afternoon when we returned to the cabin, a beautiful, soft red easy chair awaited us. I called to thank her, and we saw her frequently till she left the ship for her vacation. A wonderful representivie for NCL. We couldn't ask for more from any staff.

 

Swoosh(Denise) did all the work for the meet and greet. Even though many people were sea sick (we had winds of 70-90 miles per hour and high seas) many still came. We met several great couples we saw throughout the cruise and it made the trip so much sweeter. Thank you Denise. Your son and DH are remarkable people.

 

So, it's over for now. I go back to work Tuesday. No more room service, no more great shows, lounge music, piano bars, comedy shows, big band tributes, crew shows (the best) or sipping a yummy drink by the pool.

 

Guess I'll have to start planning the next cruise.

Thanks for taking the time to write a review of your trip. I can't get enough Dawn reviews. It sounds like you had a great time....but back to reality....bummer!

Really enjoyed your review. DH and I sailed on Dawn a year ago with my DD and her DH, as well as his parents--who also had a cabin like yours and loved it as much as you did. We spent our sailaway party in their cabin too.

 

I am already looking forward to our next Dawn cruise in Jan 2007. Can't wait to return. Loved all the restaurants and especially enjoyed the movie theater on sea days. There are so many things that I enjoy about this ship. One thing I find unique about this ship is the hallway around the casino. It is so delightful to not have to walk thru a smoke filled room to get to the theater. The ship was well designed to separate smoking areas. On the other hand, I find RCCL ships really do a poor job at controlling smoking areas. As much as I like RCCL ships, I find it very difficult because you must walk thru smoke filled areas all over the ship to get to their theaters or their specialty restaurants.

Thank you TRAVELTEAM to share your experience with us, it's a fresh breeze that help me wait until february 2nd, the day my spouse and I will climb on the DAWN for the 10 days eastern caribbeans cruise.

 

Tell me, I suppose you kept all the FREESTYLE DAILY programs published on the ship every day? I wish to get these programs to help us prepare our journey.

It'll be absolutely cool if you could scan or catch a photo of each pages of the FREESTYLE DAILY programs, share it and make it available to download on the forum.

Yes, I saved all the newsletter from the trip. I wish I could scan and attach, but unfortunately, I'm not that technically advanced. U could post that question on this board as a new thread, or ask me specific questions that I will try to answer. What I can guarantee, is a great trip, more food than u could ever want, and great entertainment.

 

What cabin are u in? If you have a suite it comes with butler service, and your wants will be met easier.
