We usually cruise on Celebrity and Azamara because they forbid smoking in all indoor areas.  But we want to do a Baltic itinerary with Oslo, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Helsinki.  They don't offer this itinerary.  HAL does this rt Rotterdam on Rotterdam.  According to HAL website smoking is still allowed in the casino.  It appears that HAL has  changed some casinos into no smoking during dry docks.  Does anyone know when next Rotterdam dry dock is scheduled?  If so, will there a conversion into no smoking casino?   Thanks and I hope that I'm not intruding.  We plan on doing this in spring 2021.

HAL seems pretty committed to smoking being permitted in casinos as evidenced by the smoking casino in its newest ships including the brand new Nieuw Statendam. Vista Class ship casinos have been made non smoking primarily due to entertainment areas being so close to the casino on those ships. However it seems they plan to keep all non Vista Class ship casinos smoking. We are not happy about this and are confining our HAL cruising to the non smoking casino ships.

Thanks for your reply.  My other alternative is the Sky Princess rt Copenhagen, which also has a smoking casino.

Reposting from the main HAL forum...

We were on NA in April of 2017, and the casino was non-smoking after renovations to the piano bar area across the way...  I had assumed it would remain non-smoking, but the HAL website - supposedly updated to June 2019 - does NOT list Nieuw Amsterdam as one of the completely  non-smoking casinos.  Can someone who has sailed recently tell me whether HAL has reverted to smoking  in the NA casino?  Our booking depends on the answer...  Many thanks!

This was our experience in February of this year as well.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like that FAQ section on the Know Before You Go website page is a recent addition and mirrors the KBYG PDF document that you can open there.

In their main FAQ (the Frequently Asked Questions at https://www.hollandamerica.com/en_US/faq.html) it says:

Onboard Zuiderdam, Oosterdam, Westerdam, Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam the casinos are non-smoking. Onboard all other Holland America Line ships, smoking is allowed in the casinos except for non-smoking days.

That was also my experience in February on NA, and I've not seen anyone mention it as allowing smoking on the main board on recent trips.  The casino opens up to the music venues in that area so it would be a big complaint if they started allowing smoking.  I think it's just another example of their poor oversight of the website.

We are going on our first transatlantic cruise on HAL Veendam the end of August and I wanted to know what the smoking accommodation is like. I know they have a certain side of the ship outdoors but crossing the Atlantic sounds like outside on the deck may be rough. I'm curious if anything changes.

Thanks In advance

Craig

To all my non-smoking friends? If you all hadn't been such drama queens about smoking on ships it wouldn't be so bad in the Casinos. What's wrong with smoking on like the promenade deck where it's open, the ships moving, and you really don't have to stand right next to me. No wonder kids now are called snowflakes, their parents sheltered them from everything. The Casinos stink, I agree, but there isn't many other places for smokers to go and we are really nice people.

Completely disagree about casinos being smoky BECAUSE of limited alternative areas to smoke. We began cruising 20 years ago when smoking was allowed in cabins, bars and most outside areas of ships and the casinos smelled terribly of smoke back then just as they do today. It is not a "snowflake" issue at all for folks who become seriously ill from smelling the "smoke" whether it comes from "nice people" or not.

I have been cruising for 24 years and I remember those days fondly. Can't say the casinos were that bad. Most of the time they were pretty empty. I can't stand the smell either. There needs to be more areas to smoke, kind of spread it out. Covered areas on open decks would be great. Cruise Lines need to make a decision! Totally non-smoking or more space.

Oh my goodness, they were terrible back then. I am a frequent player and would only go on ships that had a self service laundry so I could wash my smokey clothes after an evenings play. Stayed out of the casino on formal nights...did not want my dress clothes to reek from the casino. Left HAL in 2008 when HAL still  allowed in cabin smoking because the casino was so so smokey. Cruised Celebrity, Oceania, Crystal and Cunard which all have no smoking casinos. Have returned to HAL but only on their five non smoking casino ships. So wishing they would ban casino smoking on all ships but unfortunately that seems unlikely since newest HAL ships allow casino smoking.

But here in lies the problem with all anti smoking points

In a world where smoking is legal, and as an example and just alone in the USA almost 40 million adults still use tobacco, and world wide litterally hundreds of millions, the fact, and I'm quoting your post, that some become "seriously ill" from smelling smoke should be up to that person or persons to avoid areas where they may knowingly encounter smoke, and not rely or demand that others modify their legal adult behavior.

I personally was in favor of HAL eliminating smoking in cabins and balconies, and can 100% see where this was a needed action, but in fairness that move should and does also include adequate smoking areas for those adults who still wish to smoke. But as is often the case many misconstrue efforts to agree to moderate a specific behavior with new added rights bestowed apon them to demand some new unintended and  unwarranted additional regulation not originally agreed apon.

Cruising and vacationing  is a leisure activity which can be preselected in advance based on your likes , tolerances, and dislikes, and it should come as no surprise when given all the available options to those with smoke intolerance's that one encounters the smell of legal smoke in a casino, or any where else where designated smoking is permitted , when such information was readily available before purchase.

Bottom line is if smoking is an personal or health issue, and HAL or any other company allows unacceptable smoking, you have the right and option  to  not cruise HAL, and seek out a acceptable alternative, and not rely on the modified behavior of other adults who's adult lifestyle's,  likes, and dislikes differ from your's.

So it has been proven that second hand smoke causes cancer. You are saying that smokers should have the right  to harm people by causing cancer as they exercise their legal right to smoke in public venues.  I guess, you also are saying that if people do not want to have their lives threatened by second hand smoke, they need to avoid public venues where smokers are present because smokers should not be asked to modify their behavior. Okay, thanks for laying out your argument. I and many others disagree.

Well we all know now that smoking isn't good for your lungs, but I don't think sitting in a car in traffic is very good for the lungs either. So what you are saying is that every non-smoker that gets lung cancer is from second hand smoke? This subject could go on forever. That's like Cruise Lines saying it's because ashes can blow back in and cause a fire which they have never proven. All I say is give some covered space out of the elements.

I'm a big fan of indoor bans for the sake of the employees.  Those who must work those areas don't have much choice of whether or not to be constantly exposed to second-hand smoke short of quitting the job.  With all of the enterprising lawyers in the world combined with the widespread knowledge of how dangerous continuous exposure is, it's only a matter of time before companies will be held liable for putting employees in that situation.   I'm all for having outdoor smoking areas for those who need them.  It's a dwindling population.

Contact your legislator's and change the law's that's the way the system works , but until then, like drunk driver's, or gun violence as examples, and of course smoking  there will always be a cost to society for individual freedom's. We as apart of a free society can't pick and choose what we feel should be someone else's right's, even if their right's comes  at a personal cost to ourselves...  That's advanced CIVIC's 101

So ..Yes, that exactly what I'm saying.

So far, state laws in Florida and elsewhere, have avoided regulating smoking on cruise ships.  Federal law sticks to safety rules(Coast Guard and CDC).  I support no smoking casinos and outdoor smoking areas..  Walking through a smoky casino is disgusting and unhealthy.

Don't walk through the casino! There is more than one deck on most ships.

Let's see, you are listed as having just 56 posts on CC and all that are available by searching (over 1/3 of them) are devoted to this thread. Many of your suggestions like "find another deck to walk on" or "avoid walking through the casino" are not realistic options on many ships. Suggest you find another thread/subject for your trolling.
