It's amazing how many thousands of people have developed great sensitivity to smoking over the years since the media decided that's what needed to happen.  I happen to be very sensitive to the smell of garbage and sewage but nobody wants to discuss that.

I'd say that cigarette smoke is pretty much in the same "ick" category as garbage & sewage.    Obviously, if you're choosing to inhale the stuff for hours a day, you would disagree.

I would assume the smoking area would not affect the rest of the ship while underway ... isn't that why they put it aft?

We stayed in a corner aft suite on deck 6 of Noordam, which is directly below the smoking area on deck 9 (Lido).  On three occasions on a 34-day cruise, we smelled cigarette smoke in our cabin.  Each time it lasted about 5 or 10 minutes and went away on its own.  I'm allergic to cigarette smoke but this was infrequent and short-lived, so it didn't affect our enjoyment of the cruise.

Were you underway when the smoke came into your cabin?  Three decks is a long way for smoke to travel, rather surprising.  Certainly not pleasant, but you are taking an accepting, moderate attitude.  Quite refreshing to not hear complete hysteria about your experience.

I think someone nearby you was breaking the rules - it has been known to happen

We were on the Oosterdam on a Greek cruise in 2022. There was a passenger directly below our balcony who smoked all day long on his verandah. We reported him to Guest Services, and he was warned and caught several times but kept smoking. About halfway into the cruise he and his wife were escorted off the ship at one of our ports. Breaking the rules can have consequences.

This is GREAT to hear.  People like this need to travel by themselves so they can do whatever they want whenever they want to without annoying everyone else.

Yes, they all occurred on sea days.

That was my first thought.  I went out to the balcony to see if I could spot the offender, knowing that balcony smoking is a major safety hazard on a cruise ship.  Not only did I not see anyone (and the aft corner balconies get a good view of other balconies) but the odor wasn't apparent outside, only inside our cabin.  I spent 45 years doing research in a lab, so I'm used to trying to figure things out with insufficient data, but this one has me stumped.

Someone could have been smoking in the bathroom. The assumption that someone is breaking the rule is far simpler than thinking the smoke is wafting DOWN 3 decks. That seems a little off

On Rotterdam this year we were in cabin 5055. We had smoke coming from people on deck 8. Saw them clearly, both smoking. I said something to them and they saw and heard me. Next morning,  same thing. I called Guest Services and never saw them smoking again. We were onboard 50+ days and no way was I going to put up with that crap.

We have an upcoming cruise booked on the Noordam and I understand that smoking is permitted in the Oak Room.  I was wondering if the smoke also enters the Crows Nest area and affects that area.  I was also considering booking a cabin outside of the Crows Nest and was curious if some of those cabins are affected by smoke from the Oak Room.

TIA

There is a post on another social media platform indicating that the smoking area on the Rotterdam has moved from starboard aft Lido deck (behind the Sea View Bar) to port aft Lido deck. Can anyone confirm?

Not permitted on our Noodam cruise in 2019 either.

Thanks for the quick replies.  Here's what's listed on the website, but I'll trust your firsthand experiences.

We spent a lot of time in the Crows Nest and I never saw anyone smoking in the Oak Room. If they did I never smelled any second hand smoke.

Travellers to Australia who vape will need to be aware of new laws introduced this month.

https://www.tga.gov.au/news/media-releases/new-vaping-laws-commence-1-july-2024

Here is the relevant detail if arriving by air or sea.

Bringing vapes into Australia

Persons entering Australia by ship or aircraft may bring a small quantity of vapes under a traveller’s exemption.

The vapes must be for use in the treatment of the traveller or someone the traveller is caring for, who is entering Australia on the same ship or aircraft.

The maximum allowable quantity is:

  • 2 vapes
  • 20 vape accessories (including cartridges, capsules or pods), and
  • 200 mL of vape substance in liquid form.

Vapes that contain substances that are controlled drugs under regulation 5 of the Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations 1958, such as cannabis, are not counted in the above limits.

Further information from the Australian Border Force (ABF) for travellers bringing goods into Australia can be found here: Can you bring it in? (abf.gov.au)

I've been on a few ships with a smoking area on the rear, outdoor Lido deck. Often when the doors open between the Lido restaurant and the smoking area, the smoke does waft in. It's really unpleasant.

On one NCL ship there was a person smoking a cigar on his veranda, just one deck up and one cabin forward from us. I reported it to the customer service desk and nothing happened. The next time that person was smoking on the veranda I call customer service and said, "either you can go to this persons room and tell them not to smoke or I can do it, which would you prefer?". I never smelled smoke for the rest of the cruise.

On the Oosterdam in 2022 we had a similar situation with the cabin directly below ours with a guy smoking on his balcony almost nonstop. The first time I reported the guy, guest services security people came to our cabin first to see the guy smoking below us, then talked to the guy. The next day the guy was smoking on his balcony again and a call to GS got him another reprimand. After the 3rd time he smoked and was reported I saw him and his partner being escorted off the ship at the next available port.

Casino Smoking

Does HA still allow smoking in the casino?  We were on board the NS a couple years ago and even though smoking was only allowed in half the casino the air quality was a problem for me since I have asthma.

Thanks for any recent observations.
