Casino Smoking

Does HA still allow smoking in the casino?  We were on board the NS a couple years ago and even though smoking was only allowed in half the casino the air quality was a problem for me since I have asthma.

Thanks for any recent observations.

We were on the Koningsdam last November and the smoking in the whole casino was horrible. Smoke propagated up the stairwells near the casino and out to the shops. It was the worse smoking I can remember on any ship. HAL needs to step up like other lines and ban smoking in all indoor venues like the casinos.

Is smoking permitted on Holland America Line cruises?

Answer: For the comfort of all of our guests, all staterooms (cabins), showrooms and most other indoor areas are designated non-smoking. No smoking of any kind will be permitted on any stateroom verandah.

Designated Smoking Areas:
Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Oosterdam, Westerdam, Zuiderdam

Sea View Bar area*
Oak Room (Noordam only, including cigar and pipe smoking)

Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam, Rotterdam

Sea View Bar area*
Casino-smoking is allowed in designated areas for active players only and only when outside of 12NM from the Netherlands

Volendam, Zaandam

Sea View Bar area*
Casino-smoking is allowed in designated areas for active players only and only when outside of 12NM from the Netherlands

Sports Deck, outside Crow's Nest

Cigar and pipe smoking is not allowed anywhere inside the ship; it is only permitted on the outside decks where smoking is otherwise allowed.

Electronic cigarettes are not permitted in staterooms or in other public areas of the ship other than designated smoking areas.

Any guest who smokes inside staterooms or on verandahs in violation of our policy will be charged a US$250 cleaning fee per day of violation and will risk being removed from the ship for repeated violations.

Holland America Line reserves the right at any time to modify the smoking policy onboard or alter the locations where smoking is permissible.

There is a post on another social media platform indicating that the smoking area on the Rotterdam has moved from starboard aft Lido deck (behind the Sea View Bar) to port aft Lido deck. Can anyone confirm?

Yes, it's true.  We were on in May, and the smoking area was, as it has always been, aft of the bar area on the port side.  We boarded again yesterday, and, indeed, were surprised to see that the area was moved to the starboard side.

It covers pretty much the same area, from the opening where the stairs go up to deck 10, back the entire covered area.  Nine tables in three rows of three, and then the couch and easy chair arrangement.  Seven of the tables are small rectangles....which would seat four for dining, but can accommodate an additional chair at each end for conversation/drinking.   The other two tables are the four-seat rounds like before.  I can't remember how many of the round tables were in the area on the other side; but somehow this feels like less seating.

I'm confused... The Sea View Bar & the smoking area have always been on the Starboard Side.

I heard that the smoking area has been moved to the Port side.

So you are saying it was port side in May then now back to starboard??

I think they got their port and starboard sides mixed up. It was definitely starboard when we disembarked at the end of April.

Facing the bow of the ship, (that's the pointy end) PORT = LEFT,    STARBOARD = RIGHT.

Obviously, you are all correct and I am embarrassed.  I've sailed for many, many years and this was a hasty reply and a newbie flip/flop of terms.  I can't even blame it on too many visits to the Sea View Bar.

Of course, in May it was starboard side next to the bar; now it is on port side.

My apologies for taking the thread down a unnecessary detour..

Not to worry.  The only person who never makes an error is the person that never does anything......

Actually you mixed it up again. The smoking area on Rotterdam is deck 9 aft, starboard side near the sea view bar area.

It is not now, and has never been on the port side.

Apparently not on the Rotterdam. That was the point of my confirmation question. I read on another post that effective 6/29/2024  the smoking section on the Lido deck moved to the other side of the pool (the port side) in an attempt to make the Sea View Bar smoke-free. Mountainduo has confirmed this from his recent sailing in July on the Rotterdam.

Thank you so much for confirming smoking section now on port side of Lido deck on Rotterdam. No worries about mix up. Happy cruising!

It really doesn't matter because the secondhand smoke drifts from the Sea View bar area to the seating on the other side.   Much of the time both sides are unusable for people sensitive to secondhand smoke.

You're spot on about that.

But why would anyone visit a bar close to a smoking area if smoking bothers them?  Not like there aren't many other choices.  I'm not being snide, I'm just curious.

We like to be in the sun by the pool.  We'll go to the center pool area if they have the glass roof open.  If the roof is closed, we'll go to seaview pool.   Unfortunately, that's close to the smoking area.

Maybe because it's by the adult pool.

Because it is the adult only pool with a good bar and fantastic aft view. Last year on the Koningsdam Calif Coastal cruise the smokers took up most of the tables and chairs on both sides of the Seaview bar, the crew did nothing I saw to enforce to smoking area rules. For us it made using the Seaview bar and pool area off limits due to all the smoking.

Did you perhaps ask the staff there to address the issue of smokers breaking the rules by smoking on the wrong side?
I have to say that on our most recent NS sailing, I never observed any smokers using the port side of the sea view pool area to smoke. I guess that we were lucky on that particular sailing in that the smokers were more well behaved and actually followed the rules.

I asked one of the bartenders and he said I needed to complain to guest services, which I did more than once and nothing changed.

It’s the only outdoor bar.

Can anyone comment on the Smoking in the Casino aboard the Nieuw Amsterdam and its effect if any on the Billboard music venue.  Without the BB King set up it looks to be the only Music venue on the ship.

Just when you think this subject has been pretty much put to rest---AN UPDATE!

Yesterday, last week's cruise concluded with disembarkation/embarkation in Rotterdam, and another 7-day cruise began.  And, inexplicably, unexpectedly, the smoking area is suddenly back starboard, aft of the Sea View Bar....back where it had always been.

No clue as to why.
