DIY tour in Tenerife

Hello everyone, we will be on next month's Spirit sailing, and was wondering if anyone has done a do-it-yourself tour to El Tiede? We were hoping to spend more time at the top of the cable car than the tour companies probably allocate...is a self-drive feasible? What about taxis/buses? any thoughts would be most welcome thanks!

Rent a car from cicar and do it yourself. If you cant drive manual, you need to book asap as automatics will run out. Very easy to do. Download Google maps of tenerife and drop pins for where you want to go. Then turn off wifi. You can buy cable car ticket when you get there or beforehand. I'd do it there because you have to use it in the timeframe. They run the cable car very well. This is for mt teide. Its absolutely beautiful. I've been there 3x and love it. The park is nice also which is down the road.

Another vote to rent a car - Cicar or Enterprise both have port pick up locations. Also agree with buying tickets on the day as weather conditions may not be favourable.
