chesswiththedevil Posted January 10, 2019 #1 Share Posted January 10, 2019 I seem to recall that I had to pay extra (sales tax maybe?) for drinks using the drink package on a Carnival cruise when leaving NOLA and I was wondering if I have to pay extra while in port (waiting to leave) in Miami? Is this a thing? Also, does the Norwegian UDP allow for floating shots on drinks such as getting a rum floater on a pina colada?

Yes whenever you are in port you have to pay the sales tax at that port.
chesswiththedevil Posted January 10, 2019 Author #3 Share Posted January 10, 2019 Awesome thank you. As for adding a shot on top of a drink? Is that possible with the package?
stormynow Posted January 10, 2019 #4 Share Posted January 10, 2019 Depends on the BT, most will some won't. A little extra tip almost always works.
chesswiththedevil Posted January 10, 2019 Author #5 Share Posted January 10, 2019 Good to hear. Carnival won't do it so I guess that is a welcome perk to Norwegian's beverage package even if it doesn't work all the time.
Paul Bogle Posted January 10, 2019 #6 Share Posted January 10, 2019 (edited) With the beverage package that comes as a perk when booking "free at sea" you are allowed to order two drinks at a time. If you order a drink and a shot as a second drink you should have no problem. If you order a "double" it may or may not push the price of the single drink above the $15 limit meaning you will be charged the difference. Just order the extra shot as a separate drink and float it yourself. Edited January 10, 2019 by Paul Bogle
esm54687 Posted January 10, 2019 #7 Share Posted January 10, 2019 (edited) Worse case scenario...... order the shot as your second drink and add it yourself. T&Cs allow 2 drinks per transaction. LOL..... Paul posted as I was typing Edited January 10, 2019 by esm54687

When you are within 3 nautical miles of the US coastline you are supposed to be charged taxes. On my last cruise we had a medical issue on the ship and so the Captain said at 7p Thursday we’ll be within 3 nautical miles of NY NY and the casino and gift shops will be closed as well as taxes being charged for all purchases. We arrived at NY NY by 10p Thursday but our disembarkation wasn’t until 8 a Friday.

Cruisercl Posted January 16, 2019 #11 Share Posted January 16, 2019 $0.72 per glass of wine. After the first glass of wine, we did not pay the tax. We were able to get a 'double pour'. Had to do it at Sail Away!!!
xcell Posted January 16, 2019 #12 Share Posted January 16, 2019 (edited) Port taxes are under a $1 per drink (for each drink). Edited January 16, 2019 by xcell
