Never gambled before. Will they teach you how to play?

We leave on Regal soon, and my wife and I are interested in the casino, but we live in the southeast and casinos just aren’t something typically on our radar. Does the casino have lessons on how to play the various table games, or possibly tables just for beginners?

They used to have lessons, haven't noticed the ads on ship tv lately.  Look in the Patters when you board for info.  Seems like lessons were early in the day, if they still have them.

Just saw all the answers.  Replies were 0 when I started my post.

Also, if you head into Fort Lauderdale a day or two early, there are a couple of casinos in spitting distance from the port (no more than 10 miles). You may do better learning in a land-based casino. The Isle Casino is pretty close and not terribly crowded.

They will have beginner lessons during the first part of your cruise.  They will give you some chips and walk your group through how to actually play the various games (craps, roulette, etc.).  After your lesson, they will give you a small chip voucher for one bet at a table that you can use while your playing.

There is a plethora of "how to" videos on YouTube. Everything from craps to blackjack to video poker. Spend an hour or so to learn the basics. After that, if you can, try some low stake playing at a casino in FLL before your cruise.

There are also slot tournaments you can enter for $20ish, no skill required, in the casino on sea day mornings or afternoons. Check your patter. If you receive a coupon book, look for a BOGO or similar.

There are things you shouldn’t learn in life.

So true . I  sold to the hotels & Casinos in Las Vegas for over 30  years  . This is what I learned from early on  .Keep your money in your pocket & you are a sure winner :classic_biggrin: .  The only 2 betting games that are true odds are Bacerat   & Craps . Slots will drain you & other table games are house games ,meaning you don't stand a chance  .It can be very pain full  to people to loose money that they could have spent on many other better things  .Take it from me don't think it is fun ,better to play cards with others for fun  or scrable or chess or what ever turns your fancy

Yes they do run special beginners lessons in the various games, usually in the day not necessarily for actual money.  You might even get a free bet voucher for later on, which is where they get the take.  Twenty newbees turning up for real sessions.  My advice is avoid roulette, go for Blackjack (21's) or Craps.  Research on YouTube on the standard system experienced players follow and under what circumstances.  Establish a "betting fund" on board say  $50 each and see how long you can keep going.  If you win continue but if you blow the $50 give up.  Once you enter the casino, move to your game and observe the game in progress for twenty minutes or so before taking a seat.  Ideally you want a table with about half the seats occupied.  The fun is in the playing in my opinion and it's about how long you can keep going, in minutes, hours or days on your initial stake, ideally however if you have a biggish win walk away then too. You can stand up, cash in and walk away at any time after a hand finishes you do not need to wait until the dealers change etc.  It is far less dangerous to gamble in casinos on a cruise than at home or online as you spend far less time on cruises than you do at home or have internet access.

On the Royal, a couple of years ago, they had a "learn how to play Texas hold em" class.  I think there were 8 of us at the table and the winner (me) won a prize.  I had played Texas hold em before, but never on an electronic table.  Glad I took the class.

I was seated at the end of the casino bar enjoying a gin and tonic,  while my wife was engaged  in a game of high stakes. The best entertainment that day was watching the beginners play 21. I watches two table get instruction and  the banter back and forth between the tables was hilarious. Later that week one of the class participants hit a jack pot  paying out 7 G's.

The thing to remember about gambling is that it is a form of entertainment not a way of making money.  Just like when you book an excursion it costs a certain amount; e.g.  "Rome on your own"  $100.  So in the casino you can stake $100 and see how long your entertainment lasts and how much you enjoy participating.  If you are disappointed that after half an hour you have not won loads of cash and all your money has gone you will then know how I felt with the "Rome on your own" excursion.  Complete let down the place was buzzing with hundreds of people.

Regards John
