Anything on the ship, including restaurant cover charges, merchandise, drinks, spa treatments, gambling in the casino, photos, required "gratuity" charges, ship sponsored excursions, etc.

But not:

- Medical center charges (at least in my experience)

- Future cruise bookings

- Excursions purchased prior to embarkation (these are paid immediately with a credit card on many/most lines)

- Currency exchange (unless you manage to launder your onboard credit through the casino - not all lines permit OBC to be used in the casino)

About the only thing I can think of that ive not been able to use it for is future cruise deposits (though I'm told you can on some lines).

Exactly what can be purchased with "On board credit" money?

Depending on the cruise line and the type of on board credit it can be anything that is sold or available on the ship from gratuities to fine jewelry and on and on.

This may be true on some lines but not on other lines, it is really line specific.

Celebrity allows you to use their OBC to purchase shore excursions, specialty restaurants and beverage packages prior to embarkation.

Use of OBC in the casino various by cruise line. Some charge a percentage fee, others provide special chips that can only be used until lost - never cashed in.

It looks as though OP is going to be on Carnival.

@gertagrounds, OBC can be used for anything that is charged to your S&S account.  It will be used before any other form of payment on your account.  There are no exceptions on Carnival.  If it is charged to your account, OBC can cover it.

Line specific.

On Royal Carib

They charged my parents account for medical when my mother had an issue.

Some OBC is available before the cruise for purchased early.  OBC from Royal is available, as well as OBC received through their credit card (BoA).  But not OBC purchased or from your TA.

So, we cannot put information to help out OTHERS who might read this thread?????

It is NOT in the Carnival section.  The title does not state Carnival.

And how do you know they will be on Carnival?  They did not state in the OP, and they have not come back with additional information.

Didn't say that you couldn't put it out there, just providing additional information.

To determine if someone has a cruise booked, hover on their name and then click on "Find Content."  From there, I can see that they posted on another thread that they were on Carnival.  This helped me get enough information to answer their question directly.  For example, I can see that you posted an almost identical response to someone on a thread about a passport question.

Celebrity charged my Sea pass account for medical as well, but then the question was what can OBC be used for. Perhaps OBC cannot be used to pay the medical and would remain untouched.
