Sewage smell throughout Celebrity Edge?

Recommended Posts

Unfortunately that wasn't in your first post which did come across as trying to discredit the OP.

Again, I’m sorry.  It was the first I’ve read about sewage odors on Edge and the description “It was gag-inducing, and many of the other guests I spoke with had the same horror stories of having to vacate an area or a bar because of the smell came out of nowhere made staying in an area unpleasant to say the least” was nothing we or anyone we met encountered.  It is a shame that the OP and many others had to experience this most unfortunate problem.

Is Cruise Junkie a he or a she?  I respect Cruise Junky and hope someday we meet on a cruise.

Why didn’t you mention the odor when you posted your review?

A she 😜

For the record, we were all over the ship - one party on the 9th floor and one suite. It smelled like sewage in the suite-level pool area at the front of the ship, for example. There were seven other people in the pool, and we all had a big convo together about smelling the smell.

How odd about the Retreat pool, wonder where those odors are coming from? We didn’t have any issues  eating at the bar and I think there are only one person bathrooms up there. What a mystery?

Guess you missed this in my post “ I won’t say that others haven’t experienced it but it has not been a big problem for most.“  Perhaps I should have said no one I meet had a problem and I meet many.

But before that you made not once but twice some unwarranted implications.

Typically, the "sewer" smells you experience on ships comes from deck drain U-traps (just like the traps in the drain lines under your sink at home) that dries out due to the low humidity in the AC air.  This can happen in your cabin bathroom as well, where the floor drain (not the one in the shower, there will be either one under the toilet or a gutter type at the door) that does not regularly see water down it to replenish the trap, dries out.  A glass of water down this every couple of days takes care of it.  My guess is that as the Edge is a new vessel, the crew have not located all the deck drains in the back of bar service areas, or in technical lockers around the ship, and have not learned they need to refill these traps regularly.  Typically, within a few seconds of filling the trap, the odor goes away.

Twice in a RS on two different ships we have experienced that awful smell. Fortunately our room steward on the first cruise (Solstice) immediately knew the issue, poured water down the jacuzzi bath and the smell went immediately (we had been using the shower not the bath). He told us all about U traps and it being a ‘regular problem’. When a similar smell occurred on Eclipse we could remedy ourselves.

chengkp75, although I never visit the casino I think I would bet on you being right!

I was on the same sailing as OP. This description is great and I’m sure true. I fully meant to ask the concierge hosts in the Retreat lounge about it. The smell existed faintly in our shower on one or two occasions  (foward location suite), we smelled it in the Retreat pool- it would come in waves, and in the sunset bar, again in waves, but we were only there once.

Just back from the January 20 sailing of the Edge, and wondering if anyone else on recent sailings had to contend with a sewage smell on the Celebrity Edge? It was gag-inducing, and many of the other guests I spoke with had the same horror stories of having to vacate an area or a bar because of the smell came out of nowhere made staying in an area unpleasant to say the least.

It wasn't the ship exhaust, because it happened in many different places on the ship, above and below deck, fore and aft. Worst occurrences were at the Sunset Bar, Retreat Pool, and on floors with guest rooms when crossing through the ship.

Employees were covering their noses and making similar grossed-out faces as the guests, and no one knew what the cause of the smell was (or at least weren't sharing more information).

We were on the New Years Eve sailing and I also noticed the horrible sewage smell.  It lasted for a few days- strongest in the atrium by the Martini bar area-  Seemed worse when in port-  I think they have some sort of problem with the waste disposal system.

Hope it gets fixed soon!

It never entered my mind that anyone would be expected to be comped anything due to a sewage smell. In my experience it is, unfortunately, a common odor on a lot of ships.

We have experienced the sewage smell in the past on a couple of cruises. Both were on Princess, so yes it happens no matter which cruise line.

I recall MSC Seaside having this problem when she first came out.  Complaints lasted for over a month until they found the problem.

Maybe that's what they mean when they say "new ship smell."😯

On our Jan 20th cruise we did experience the sewerage smell a couple of times near the photo gallery area deck 4.  Nothing too bad but we found it surprising for a new ship.

But we never smelled any sewage last week and never had to vacate any where.  This is a bit fishy:classic_wacko::classic_biggrin:.

Hi Oville,

I know you are a long time poster on Cruise Critic and an avid Celebrity Cruiser (and I was always jealous of you because you lived on the Cape - I love Brewster and would love to live there!)  I usually agree with most of your posts.  However, as a avid long-time Celebrity cruiser myself I can definitely tell you that there was a sewage smell at the Martini Bar (and i'm what people would call a "Celebrity cheerleader"!)   If you were standing on the "dance floor" and looking at the bar, the smell was on the right-hand side of the bar.  When we sat at chairs at the bar on the extreme right hand side of the bar it had a definite odor.  Not bad for the most part,  but you could definitely smell it and, as I said, one night I left the bar because it was really strong.  We never smelled it while sitting at a table in the area - only while sitting at the bar.  So, while you may find this "fishy", I am telling you that it was definitely there.  You can choose to believe me or not!

Was on the Jan 13 Edge sailing and there was a sewage smell one time mid morning in Cafe Bacio while we seated at a table overlooking Grand Plaza. Everyone smelled it, quite strong. We got up and left. Never smelled it again but did notice an air freshener floral scent in the area next day.

Sounds like the Edge has an issue --it is still a newer ship. Hopefully they straighten it out

i was going to ask if you ere morred in Havana... as Cuba dumps the sewage into the water---the stench in the evening if the ship is moored there is outrageous. We were on a sailing this summer and I went to GS thinking it was a ship issue. They said EVERY time they are in Havana they encounter the stench....

anyway

hope they straighten out the issue and if its a big deal-that APEX is remedied NOW

I believe you and all others who experienced the odor.  We didn’t smell it nor did anyone mention it to us last week but clearly it existed and I apologize for my fishy comment.

We enjoyed our cruise but it wasn’t without issues.  The S1 aft cabin we had was pretty rocky with vibration the first four days.  I’m not a big fan of the Martini Bar/Grand Plaza area but we loved Eden for many reasons.  Katie

Apparently all the images taken were 'stinkers'.

Possibly, people only tended to discuss it with other people also experiencing it. If the offending odors were localized, and may have come from a nearby restroom, the unlucky ones might have not wanted to tell people they were not with. Just as you would politely not mention a similar smell from a restroom while visiting someone's home!

There are lots of people on this board that will not tell you anything negative about the Edge.  I suspect that here are some that will tell you that poo on the Edge smells like roses 🌹

I remember the good old days when everyone was complaining about Fresh Squeezed OJ in the buffet. Probably some of today's cheerleaders were naysayers at the time, it just takes a real controversy to discover your inner pom poms. 🎊

... or the veracity of the complaint(s)...

What is true for one is not always true for another or others, to wit here, when there are potentially hundreds involved in the overall experience. Just apply this to service, food, cocktails or cabins as well.

Some of us are more sensitive to things than others and I can appreciate that very much.

bon voyage

Honestly I have found the Edge comments from those that have sailed her to be very balanced and informative.  Some constructive criticism, even from people generally positive about Celebrity (like me) who are no doubt given a condescending label of cheerleader on these boards.  Opinions are just opinions.
