They had to wait for the next high tide at midnight. In the meantime the Odyssey of the Seas has arrived at Eemshaven. steamboats Thank you for the clarification, @steamboats. I was looking at pictures on Maps, and it sure looked like a bridge :-)

I was looking at pictures on Maps, and it sure looked like a bridge 🙂 It´s just a dam and a lock. You can´t drive over it. What looks like a road is just for service puroses. What looks like bridge arches are the roller gates. On the North side there´s the lock chamber. It prevents the sea water going upriver during high tides (storms only) and can be used to block the river water going into the sea and "flood" the river for the conveyance. Actually there are two locks. A larger one for sea going vessels (which is used for the Meyer ships) and a smaller one for river vessels. steamboats

A river pilot will join the RCI staff on the bridge. RCI will have their best captains on the bridge. The backout down the Ems is always done in March when the water levels are highest. Going down the river backwards let’s the Azipods put more water underneath the hull. This is one of the most intricate and tricky maneuvers ever attempted. The clearance under the ships hull, when going down the Ems, is measured in centimeters. As long as the ship is still owned by the yard it is completely driven by staff from the yard and Ems River pilots, who are specifically trained for this passage. The future Captains from Royal are not driving the ship. At this time they are just visitors and watching. 1

They had technical problems with the Iona and therefore no delivery. It was a part of the machinery which came from a third party. They needed to repeat the sea trials several times until it finally was fixed. steamboats

Although the ship has left the shipyard doesn´t mean it´s completed. There will be still some interieur work going. Then they have to load stuff (like silverware, plates, glasses and more - can be even some smaller furniture like chairs, matresses, bedding) which is easier in Bremerhaven than to ship all by truck to Papenburg. Sea trials are usually only a couple of days to check out all systems and to proof that all works according to the specifications of the customer plus to perform all safety tests. steamboats

Biker19 Posted March 1, 2021 #1190 Share Posted March 1, 2021 Hmmm, would you rather have more flexibility on dates (^ limits to +/- 1 day) or ship (^ not sure what "like" ship means)?

Right, but then it says on any open sailing - if it was the same ship there would only be one sailing, if any. Of course one can't read anything into what RCI may mean in their marketing. There are no restrictions on which ship, only the stateroom category and itinerary length. here is the offer.
