Taking dogs to NYC

Hi everyone,

I have been lucky enough to get 2 kennels on the QM2 this May to take my dogs to New York (I am emigrating and preferred this option over flying). I am just wondering who else has taken their dogs to NYC from the UK and what their paperwork was like? I have been researching and so far is seems that all they need is a rabies certificate and a fit to travel certificate.

Cheers!

The US department of Agriculture is the Agency that regulates importation of animals. Here is a link to their web site. https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/pet-travel/bring-pet-into-the-united-states/pet-travel-dogs-into-us

You might take a look at the information to make sure that you have all the bases covered. They will take you to a link for the State of New York where you will be landing which has additional requirements.

I had created a good response to your query but I got distracted and Cruise Critic logged me out and then blew up when I tried to continue.

New York state asserts certain requirement which appear to largely duplicate the US federal requirements.

Read this document; I think it shows what you're looking for

As well as these federal requirements

I have done this several times.  The last was in June.    In NYC they usually funnel the passengers with dogs to a special booth.  There you go through the normal customs/immigration.   I am Canadian and this part is very quick.   A USDA will be hanging around to look at the rabies certificate and that is it.  Total time to look at the rabies certificate is perhaps 30 seconds.   I had two dogs the last time I went through and the agent only looked at one certificate for one dog.  I went to show him the second certificate but he said something along the lines of “I am sure that if you have one certificate then you have both” which of course I did.   On previous times they did check both rabies certificates.  There has never been any ask to see a fit to travel certificate but I always have everything.    One thing: I know you can’t bring dog food in with you. The one time I did have food I let the agent know I only had enough for one meal and they said “ok”.   Always found the USDA agents very pleasant.
