NCL Jade Vs Star Vs Spirit

Recommended Posts

We are looking to book a Greek Isles Cruise this May and have a choice between Jade/Star/Spirit. Price/Itineraries and days are same so it’s really only the choice of ship. To give you and idea of what we like we are a young couple in our early 30’s but generally prefer Princess to NCL (although I know this is the NCL board). We have a deposit that is due to expire if we don’t use it hence the reason for booking on NCL. We have only traveled on The Dawn preciously and loved it. While our cruise is port intensive (only 1 sea day in a 12 day cruise) we do like to have a bit of entertainment in the evenings before retiring to bed. Things we like are Bingo, Entertainment in the theatre, dancing to live music etc...

So just wanted to know which ship was a better choice to suit our needs and why did you like it? We’ve pretty much decided on the ports just confusion on the ship itself. As far as cabin is concerned we will be going inside this time since it’s so port intensive and won’t be spending much time in the cabin itself.

TIA!

I've been on all three.

The Jade and Star are fairly similar. Jade is a bit bigger, which I think gives it the edge. The Jade also has a forward facing Spinnaker Lounge, whilst the Star's is an enclosed room towards the aft. Otherwise they are fairly similar, in my opinion, with the Jade having a few more bars etc. If it was between those two In would say go for the Jade, but it's a fairly marginal decision.

The Spirit is smaller, and doesn't have as many bars/restaurants as the other two do. It is also a bit older. Some people say it is a bit tired in places, but many (including me) don't particularly notice this. Personally, The Spirit may be my favourite ship (we are sailing for the 5th time this Summer). I think it has a personality that some others are missing, and the staff have always been exceptional (the ship has a long standing hotel manager who really seems to do a great job). It has some great features like Raffles Terrace overlooking the aft and venues like Henrys Pub which the newer ships lack. Having said that, lots of people on this board aren't fans of the Spirit.

I would suggest the Jade to be safe, you won't go far wrong with the Star, but if you want to have a bit of a punt then you may love the Spirit, but run the risk of not liking it.

Jade would be my choice, why? I just disembarked Jade Feb. 1st and had a wonderful cruise; great crew, wonderful staff, lovely decor.  Love the great outdoors on the Jewel class ships (Star doen't have GOD) and the lay out is great and easily navigated.  While Spirit has been on my bucket list for a while, I understand it has it's plusses and misses, Jade has everything I needed for a great cruise.

Have a wonderful cruise no matter which ship you choose.

Cheers

Well, I had a look at the May 2019 itineraries for Spirit, Star and Jade, and can see it's difficult to choose one from!!!

We have been on all 3 ships and they are different to each other. I agree with Keith Jenner about the Spirit (we loved her when we went on her last year April), but we are in our 60/70's. I loved the casino there while DH loved Henry's Pub. We loved all bars on the Spirit - our fave bartender was on her!

Please note that Star and Dawn are sister ships …. would this help you decide?

We have been on the Jade 3 times and loved her, but she is one of the 4 Jewel ships, and they aren't our fave ships. We actually went on the Jade to the Greek Isles and we had a great time (Oct 2014).

The Dawn/Star are our least fave ships due to no forward observation lounge. But we'd be prepared to go on either again if the itinerary is good. Both have been dry-docked and I've been told they are better.

To decide on the ship/itinerary I would do the following:

  • go on the port schedule and find out if there are other ships in port for each of the ports in the itinerary
  • costs of flights to and from and hotels in the embarkation and disembarkation ports

Have fun choosing the ship/itinerary!!

Cheers!

I have been on all 3 with my most recent NCL cruises on the Jade and Spirit. I like the size of all 3 but if all things were equal, I would choose the Jade. It’s been recently refurbished and is noticeable in the common areas.

I had forgotten about the great outdoors. Definitely a plus for the Jade over the Star. In fact, thinking about it now, there is barely any area where I would say I prefer the Star over the Jade. There are lots of similarities, but where there are differences I think the Jade has the edge.

Actually, I can think of one plus for the Star, which is that o’Sheehans is a better venue for just having a drink at the bar on the Star than the Jade. However the Jade have other bars that make up for it.

Out of interest, who was that? We have met many great barstaff on the Spirit over the years.

We loved Spirit because it was a port intensive cruise and things flowed well at each stop.  In this case being smaller was an asset.  Ship wise I would prefer a Jewel class ship, but the difference is minimal except for the Spinnaker Lounge for forward observation purposes.

Spirit is our favorite of the three however,I'd say Jade.  Star same as Dawn since you've been and would be last place.

Aan …. he was also on the Jade twice previously …. in Shakers bar in 2014 and 2016. When we boarded the Spirit last year we were so surprised and delighted to see him on board … and he's been promoted! We saw (and were served by) him in several bars throughout the ship. He made my 60th birthday memorable!

Hope to see him again in Aug!

Just to clarify, the Star now with its refurbishment has a Great Outdoors space as well.  It’s called Spice H20, but just had a bunch of tables for eating outside from the buffet.  There are also 2 hot tubs here as well

Thanks all!! I think we’re pretty much sold on the Jade at this point- just wanted a few clarifications on what’s the entertainment like on the Jade? Does anyone by any chance have a sample daily agenda that they can upload or send to me via pm specifically for the Jade?
