Anyone recently off the Gem

Recommended Posts

Wondering if someone recently off the Gem can let me now what kind of entertainment was onboard? Not the shows, but actual live music?

Right!! Very strange!  Truthfully don't really find these boards to be as useful as they used to be!! It's too bad.  I've learned a lot reading threads!

Was just on the last cruise of the Gem 2/15 to 2/25 (actually we had a bonus day to 2/26).  The lounge entertainment was Leo on the guitar, the Webb band  who are awesome and was there at Christmas, a reggae/soul band who name I can't recall) but were terrific, and Brad who was on the piano also great. I don't know when you are sailing (I was on the Christmas cruise of the Gem as well this year) so entertainers are contracted and are routinely replaced.  I thought the entertainment in the lounges across the board was very good on both cruises.

Thank you for responding. We are heading to the Gem on Friday!  We've found live entertainment to be a little lacking and was hoping the Gem had some good stuff on board.

Probably because it is an older, smaller ship in the NCL line.  Everyone wants to know about the newer mega ships that perhaps they haven't sailed on.  I'm heading out on the Gem for the fist time in April, and can't find a lot of current info.  Even the info here in the CC main site (not the boards) is outdated.  Same thing for the other cruise I am going on this year, Serenade of the Seas.  Smaller and older ship, not much info, and no current reviews.

Going on the Gem for the first time in a few weeks and would also love to hear some current info. Have been on the Dawn many times and really enjoyed it so hoping for a similar experience🤞🏻First two week cruise for us so I’m hoping there will be enough to do!

The Gem is a wonderful ship.  A comfortable size, easy to get around, a nice promenade deck, the forward-facing Spinnaker Lounge, and the fabulous Great Outdoors, which is a wonderful place not only to eat outside, but also just to relax and hang out, in sun or shade.  I think you folks sailing on the Gem for the first time will enjoy it!  (And don't miss the bridge viewing room, port side forward, Deck 11.)

We are also heading out in the Gem this Friday! Maybe we will bump into you at the M&G. This will be our 8th time on the Gem. We love her! It is a smaller ship that was upgraded in 2015. We like the layout and always have had very friendly crew. Entertainment is usually very good. Love the Spinnaker, The Great Outdoors and Bali Hai which overlooks the pool deck. And as someone else mentioned, make sure to check out the bridge viewing area. If you get a chance, do the behind the scenes tour, very interesting!

Does anyone know who the cruise director is on the Gem now ?

This will be our first time on the Gem in May to Bermuda, after many trips to Bermuda on the Dawn.  Even though the Dawn is an older ship, the entertainment was always excellent, with great cruise directors and a fabulous loyal crew.

We were on the last cruise out round trip Boston to Boston on the Dawn and most people were loyal Dawn cruisers from New England.  The officers kept assuring us we would love the Gem, and commented on how nervous we were about change, we are a bit "set in our ways".   I agree there is very little here on Cruise Critic about the Gem but I will keep looking, and I hope more people will post.   Once the Gem arrives in Boston it will find a loyal band of travelers ready to cruise where ever it goes.

I was on the Gem in October. The specific performers have changed since then, but the pianist will play in the Atrium and any guitarist or small band will play in the Maltings, where there's a small stage. I did not enjoy the performances in the Maltings, because the environment was slight smoky (it's near both the casino and the cigar lounge) and very noisy. The noise was from people standing around, mainly in the corridor alongside, and yakking at the top of their lungs (because it was hard to hear each other with that music). These weren't any problem in the Atrium.

During my cruise the schedule of shows in the theater had to be changed because rough seas early in the cruise made it unsafe for the dancers in the Swing show. It was swapped with a stand-up comic who would have been in the theater later in the cruise.

What is it you want to know?  There’s plenty of info on the Jewel class ships, including the Gem.

Well, it's not one of the newer ships anymore -- most of the live reviews tend to be about the newest ships. That may have something to do with it.

Another reason may be because the last two months have been longer-duration cruises, which I'd imagine attract an older demographic (who may not be as interested in liveblogging the cruise). Plus, longer duration means more work making the live review.

There are a few reviews here: https://www.cruisecritic.com/memberreviews/getreviews.cfm?action=ship&ShipID=385

Anyway, I've pretty much heard nothing but good things about the Gem on here.

We've cruised on the Gem many times and just spent 44 days on the ship. We were sufficiently satisfied to book an 82 day itinerary on her for the coming winter. This doesn't mean that everything was perfect. Anyone with that type of unrealistic expectation is going to be disappointed by something. It does mean that we never went hungry, that we found entertainment to our liking every night, that service from the crew was generally excellent and that the senior officers always made themselves available and when informed of a problem took action to resolve it.

If you have specific questions I'll try to answer them.

44 days, and then 82 days?! I'm so jealous.

Out of curiosity, how did you book this? I've never seen such a long itinerary offered by NCL. Did you just book back-to-back-to-back-etc. sailings?

Yes, just b2b2b, etc.

My  idol --

just  curious  if  you are  going for  82 days, have  you considered an around  the world cruise -I  realize NCL  doesnt offer one--

I  suppose it is more  cost effective  to cruise  than maybe go to florida  for the winter  months--

Do you know who the Cruise Director is ?   In our opinion it makes a difference with the atmosphere on the ship.

You said it:  my idol as well.  When I retire, I will be booking on a cruise ship from January through March.  The Gem has an interesting society:  the longer cruises do tend to be a bit older, but when they have the 7 or 10 day legs thrown in, you get a real mix of ages and such.  I would never live in a retirement community with just old people complaining, nice to be around all ages, including children and teens on vacation!  My relatives were on the Gem from 1/2 through 2/26 this year, 4 different cruise segments.  Said it was like living in Fantasy Land (they are both retired school teachers).  A couple more years and I hope to be joining in!!!  they are already booked January through March on the Bliss next year!

We have considered doing an ATW cruise, but we think it's too long, and of course it's rather expensive. I think 90 days is our comfortable upper limit, although who knows...after doing 82 days we may be willing to stretch further. Until two years ago we typically did cruises from one to two weeks long. Then we did a 22 day cruise on the Oceania Insignia from Miami to Honolulu, which coincidentally was the first segment of an ATW on that ship. Last winter we did 36 days on the Oceania Marina from Miami to Tahiti (an incredible itinerary by the way that featured two days in Easter Island and 4 or 5 islands in French Polynesia). This winter we stretched to 44 days on the Gem.

Actually next year's cruise is more than three months in Florida would cost but I'm not a huge fan of staying in Florida. It's OK for  a day or two before taking a cruise,  but beyond that I get bored with hanging out at a hotel or condo there. I just don't find it very interesting.

Wow, 44 and 82 days!!  I am at least 10 years away from retirement, but now I have some new goals to think about in my retirement planning!! The Gem is my favorite ship.  I am very happy she's coming to Boston, my home port!!  This coming cruise will be my 4th on the Gem and my longest at 14 days.  I have never gotten bored on the Gem, always find something to see and do in my previous 10 or 11 day cruises.  Am looking forward to the 14 day itinerary and hanging out at the great outdoors as often as I can!!

The GEM is also my favorite NCL ship.

Booked the GEM 14 day out of NYC in January 2021...looking forward to that cruise after cruising on the Breakaway and Escape for the last several years and the Bliss this upcoming January.
