Ultra prize turns out to be refurbished not new

Recommended Posts

Just off the Vista 3/3/19 sailing, our first Ultra cruise and we had a good time except for how cramped for space and smokey the casino was.  With the Ultra cruise your guaranteed to win a prize and we were happy with ours until I found out now mine is refurbished.  One would think they were giving away new products.  I won an I pad pro and was hoping for the new I phone but figure I could trade it towards one once back home.  I check with a family member that works at an Apple store and when the barcode was pulled up for the product I won it shows "refurbished and bought from a business"  so now I can't trade it for the new face value.  They had us fill out tax forms but never put the prize dollar amount or gave us a copy maybe now I know why.  Sorry just my little rant.  The hosts were great, we got to play a few games and won some casino and real cash and my husband won a $1000 Amazon gift card.

I've never heard of an ultra cruise...but there's nothing wrong with a refurbished ipad. In fact, refurbished items are often better than new, with any defects resolved and new batteries/cases installed. Besides, it was free.

Why would you sign tax documents without the value of the prize on it? I've never had to do this before, but I NEVER sign any documentation without totally understanding all of it, and a lack of value of a prize I was going to pay tax on would have led me to not sign it. They could put ANY amount on there, and you are on the hook now. Am I missing something?

Its a casino cruise you have to get an invite, they do all sorts of drawings and give out prizes, gifts, etc..  Mostly they try to keep you in the casino as much as possible, lol.  I don't mind getting a refurbished item I just think they should have said it was and not make it look as its new.  And well all us Ultra cruisers know nothing is actually "free", lol but yes a nice gift.

Apple products hold their value on the secondary market surprisingly well. You won't have any problems unloading an iPad pro for close to retail.
