Is there lots of Cigarette smoke on brilliance of the Seas?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

This is my 1st post here so here goes.

Is there a lot of cigarette smoke in the air on the Brilliance of the Seas? Considering going on a Canada-New England cruise in Oct 2020, but have allergic reaction to lots of smoke. Any help would be appreciated. 🛳️

We've not sailed on her yet, but shall be sailing on her in May 2019 for a Transatlantic cruise.  While scrolling through the boards to get background information on the Brilliance, it was mentioned on several occasions of there being a lot of lingering cigarette smoke in and around the area of the Casino.  The posters of this information indicated the smoke/smell tended to spread out from the Casino area, into the immediate common areas surrounding the Casino.  Hope this helps.  We shall find out first hand in May.

Welcome to Cruise Critic, Shauna.

The amount of smoke on a cruise will always depend on who is sailing on that cruise, so there is no way to answer your question.

For example, I'm on the Jewel of the Seas right now, and it seems that there are fewer smokers than usual.  I applaud the trend!

BTW, that's a great itinerary.  You should definitely do it!

There are times when conditions are such that the centrum acts as a casino cigarette smoke distribution system.

I had clients who were a few cabins away from the Centrum on deck 7 complain about the smoke.

Of course, it will depend on the number of smokers on your cruise, and how many of them are in the casino at any given time.    That is the only inside venue where smoking may be allowed (while gambling....you aren't allowed to just go there for a smoke).

smoking is restricted to only a couple of outdoor spaces..and the Casino.  its very easy to avoid the outdoor spaces as they are all on one  side of the ship.  the casino.. not always that easy.   in some cases it wafts out onto the Promenade and other public spaces and there is no avoiding it unless you avoid that deck completely.

Try to get a cabin away from the centrum.   You can avoid it easier that way if there is an issue on your sailing.

Totally agree on that one!  Big chimney.  😞

There is no Promenade on Brilliance.  It has a Centrum that is open to each deck level...which acts like a chimney for smoke coming out of the open entrance on the casino which is right next to it.

Just off the Freedom and one end of the Schooner Bar was also inundated by the smoke stench coming from the casino.

Hello, Sha-Sha!

Welcome to Cruise Critic!  First of all, I recommend Brilliance 100% for a Canada/ New England cruise.  Even if you do not get a balcony, there are so many smoke free public spaces that you can enjoy.  It is true that the Centrum can be very smokey.  We are currently on a back 2 back.  The first 4 days were okay, as there was not very much smoking going on.  This leg (5 days) is totally different.  We are on deck 8, which is 2 decks above the casino.  We are unable to enjoy the Centrum on sea days and during evening events due to the smoke.

However, this ship has 3 excellent options for sea views without the smoke.  The Colony Club on deck 6 is beautiful and spacious, with aft views.  Then there is the Schooner bar (our favorite Schooner of all the classes we have sailed) and the Starquest lounge.  The only downside about the Starquest is that it is frequently used for art displays.

With all that said, I highly recommend a balcony, but book one far away from the Centrum - at least 10 cabins or so.  Besides the smoke, the Centrum has loud gameshows and dance parties until about 11:30 every night.  We are currently quite sleep deprived, but still enjoying our cruise 🙂

Yeah, I remember those stairs (spiral stairs I think I remember?) coming up from the casino just below the Promenade.  That opening was like a chimney hole into the Promenade and upper areas also.

It really is a shame that RCI does not do the simple thing on the Radiance series set up.  Just install a door at the entrance to the casino to keep the smoke from billowing out of there and into the common areas.  😞

(Why am I bothering???)

That is total nonsense.  Of course people go there just to smoke.  No one - NO ONE - stops them from doing this.

Agree. People go in there just to smoke all the time. Cruise on B2B and couple times while in Port ship has to refuel. When doing this there is no smoking on open decks, so only place for them to smoke is in Casino

We were on Brilliance TA last fall, and there was a man sitting at a stool at the last slot machine as you walked in on the Port side.  He was reading his book and puffing away, and all his smoke was drafting out into the Centrum.   I complained, but it fell on deaf ears.  They didn't seem to give a hoot or a crap or a damn.

WRONG, WRONG WRONG, just plain WRONG!   Anyone can use the casino as a smoking lounge, regardless if gambling.  The only restriction  is tables. (on must play to sit at the tables).     Smokers may use any slot machine chair they want,  or smoke in any smoking areas of the casino, even if the casino is closed.

ps - speaking of falling on deaf ears..........

 Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all the replies. I've thought it over and since my smoke allergy is bad(The people who live above us have a relative that comes over and smokes right over our living room and my nose runs, my eyes get swollen, itch, and water as if I am crying and I also get bad asthma when around it for a prolonged time.) I just can't see going on RCI at all. I haven't put any money down yet so I won't lose any money. My friend is also allergic to smoke and I know we would not enjoy the cruise. Most likely if I went I would need a breathing treatment several times if the infirmary has asthma treatments. I found another cruise line that's more expensive about $300.00 more and has things we like and no smoke. I still get to go to Canada and will be able to breath without trouble. Thank you all for your help. It helped a lot.  🙂

True, and in some cases it is encouraged. The Compass lists as a place to smoke, plus when taking on fuel they tell people to go smoke in the casino. In fact, on some ships (Harmony & Symphony for sure) there is a sitting area with no machines and ashtrays that encourage people to smoke without gambling.

Agree totally.  I have had to walk through the casino on many occasions when there was no gambling going on (port days) and would see many smokers just sitting on any slot table stool or chairs just to be in there to smoke.
