Beach close by to pier

We are going on a RCCL cruise, stopping in Belize City.  Are there any beaches within walking distance or cab ride that are safe and not too far from the pier?  Do we have to be concerned about leaving the dock area?  I've read some mixed reviews.

1.3 million tourists go to Belize every year.  One or twp of them return home alive.

take an excursion out to an island off shore.  There are no pretty beaches on the mainland in that area.  The islands, on the other hand, are paradise!  For a beach, you want to go out there.
