Oasis incident at Freeport Shipyard

To second what chengp said.

Jacksonville had a decent size shipyard on the Saint John's river near downtown.  I remember growing up and crossing the bridges and seeing multiple ships being worked on, periodically even a cruise ship.  I believe sometime in the mid 80's or even perhaps in the 90's it closed down.  Now 30 years later they are still discussing what to do with the land.

 

The reason why it closed was mostly they couldn't compete cost wise with overseas yards

They stretch ships by cutting them in half and adding a section, is it that unreasonable to suggest that they could cut and stretch the dry dock in Freeport to handle the Oasis Class ships?

Until she actually gets within AIS range, it's all just an educated guess. Fun to watch, but probably not anything you'd want to place any bets on in Las Vegas.:classic_laugh:

Actually I think the AIS said the 18th when she left the Bahamas, and her course has been steady at nearly due east, so I'd make that bet. 😉

In theory they could plan to make GBSY dock 2 or 3 bigger but where would they do the work?  The floating dock they want to expand would need to placed inside a dry dock capable of holding it to stretch it.  In that sense it suffers from the same issue as Oasis class - no dry dock big enough nearby to accommodate it.

 

Carnival is starting to face the same challenge. Their SEC filings state that "most" of their ships can be serviced in GBSY.  Not all ships in the fleet can be accommodated in GBSY and with Carnival building bigger ships they have the same challenge coming at them, not only with ships being built but with their current largest ships.  Their 3 latest ships are new so not a 2020 issue but it soon will be for them as the 5 year count down clock is ticking. 

 

With dock 2 down at the moment and as part owners of GBSY Carnival faces the issue together with RCCL. 

 

MSC is planning on substantially growing it's US cruise operations over the coming years and then there is NCL with growing ships as well.  MSC has deep pockets and a lot of experience in the shipping business.   

 

It will be interesting to see what they all end up doing about it.

Location as of 11am Eastern time 27.78821 / -43.34752 - 1942nm west of Cadiz. She is currently making 17.9 knots and still traveling due east at 90 degrees. That will have her arriving in 4 days 12 1/2 hours - or early morning on the 17th (if she were to turn directly towards Cadiz, not change speed and run over the peninsula).

The shipyard operators spoke at a conference in Florida last week, and only acknowledged that the dock will be out of service for quite some time. Nevertheless, they said that they have a full slate of work to keep them busy.

 

Carnival is building a new terminal on Grand Bahama. I have little doubt that the GB shipyard will recover sooner than later to  service the growth in the industry.

Derek, where are you getting these updates from? Do you pay for the upgraded version of marine traffic?

I think I'm the lucky recipient of a glitch. I added Oasis to my "fleet" and suddenly started getting these updates. I have other ships in my fleet and do not get the same from them. Perhaps give it a try? (create a login then add Oasis to your fleet)

You could also do what I did; sign up for the 7 day free trial, immediately cancel it (to avoid auto-renewing), and then use it to track Oasis for the next seven days. Suppose one could use different emails and then get another free trial if there was a desire to track it longer...

I believe all basic MarineTraffic memberships are free.  Those basic memberships have the limit of 30 notifications per month and no satellite info.  Basically, I believe the land based AIS info is crowd sourced with volunteers running receivers, so it doesn't cost MarineTraffic much to spread this info to consumers.  When you add a ship to your fleet and it enables notifications by default, the mid-day position report is on by default.  I think this mid-day report MAY be an exception to the "no free satellite info" policy.  The cruise-line "private islands" in the Bahamas are often a black hole with no data coming out when the ships make beach port calls.

 

By the way, so NOT use the MarineTraffic option to notify you when a ship changes their AIS destination on a free plan as it can burn thru it very quickly.  Maybe somebody can enlighten me on how the AIS destination is set on the transmitter, but I have seen some instances when I got 10 notifications in almost no time as apparently an officer was slowly scrolling thru a list of (bogus) destinations and I got a notification for each one until they found the right one.

 

On a semi-related note, folks can use MarineTraffic to follow "Mr Steven", the SpaceX ship that has the big net to try and catch the rocket fairings.  It does some crazy zig zag patterns as it practices.  I haven't figured out how to track the SpaceX landing drone ships (OCISLY), but since they are basically barges, they don't have AIS and the tugs used change?

I have been using marinetraffic's free service to track a nearby friend's boat for more than a year. I'm used to get arrival/depature notifications - but I never have received noon position reports till I added Oasis. I guess the only obvious difference is my friend's boat is always within receiving distance and Oasis is not. As a comical sidenote...I live on a boat with AIS...no I won't tell the name! hehe 🙂

We’ve been hard at work getting Oasis of the Seas ready for your May 5th cruise. As promised, here is an update.

  • Oasis of the Seas is crossing the Atlantic Ocean, making her way to Cadiz, Spain.
  • While at sea, we continue to make progress on the necessary repairs.
  • We’ll arrive in Cadiz on April 18th, where we’ll complete the maintenance to the propulsion system and finalize repairs.

We’ll share our next update with you on April 23rd and will provide more information on the AquaTheater’s progress, as well.

You might not want noon position reports for your friend's boat, but I bet it is an option in MarineTraffic.  The notifications are quite versatile.  Compare your notification setting for the two vessels.   I believe that MarineTraffic may have changed the default notifications that are enabled when a ship is added to your fleet since you added your friends boat.  But the noon and/or midnight position reports will eat up your monthly free notifications.

 

Your friends boat is likely always within land (ie free) receiving distance.  I believe the "real" (including cruise) ships also send their AIS data to satellite, but that is a paid upgrade to get access to that data.  I have no idea if the paid satellite services can pick up and track small-ish sailboats, or if the sailboats need a better transmitter.

You're right - the defaults did change. Also seems like there are new options from the last time I checked - which are going to be handy. If you're curious why I stalk my friend's boat - he rents it out and I help him keep an eye on it for unusual behavior. As I understand it - the satellite can detect AIS-B transponders, however not quite as well.

Somewhat related as it can show what fast work they can do in drydock... On April 4th Viking Idun (long ship) ran into a tanker near the Netherlands. She went into drydock for emergency repairs the next day. Today she left the drydock and is returning to service in Amsterdam. She's parked only 10 minutes from my home so I rode over to see what she looks like. To my amazement there is no hint of anything ever happening. I've attached before and after photos.
