Couldn’t resist this photo.  OMG too funny.  The dog was watching everyone and never barked.

You will find pictures and statues of Napoleon in every room but one.  Pretty egotistical IMO 😉

A lot of the ornate stuff like the chairs and settee was made in Lucia:

Since we weren’t going to be in Ponza, they wasted no time getting an updated When and Where to us for today.

I have to say the talk on the Punic Wars today was very good 🙂

Ok, time to return to Napoleon’s house:

Up the stairs we go:

These chairs were also made in Lucca:

This is Napoleon’s bedroom.  The bed is very short (like him).

Pretty ceiling - very ornate:

And if there isn’t a picture of Napoleon, there’s a statue of him - LOL.

This is Pauline’s bedroom and apartments.  Napoleon’s wife, Josephine never joined him here.  Instead, his sister came.

I doubt this pic is good enough sadly with the glass but this dress which Pauline was famous for wearing was gorgeous.

And, we all know, kazu is going to go out to visit gardens.

The offer to buy Future Cruise Deposits arrived today.

I found it interesting to read that you can buy Future Cruise Deposits for others as long as you have the pertinent details.  Seems to be a contradiction from other reports when people couldn’t buy them for others.

Very interesting!

I am kind of a fan of Napoleon, considering him a visionary and brilliant tactician who in the end lost in Waterloo because of his most trusted Marchal’s failure to comply with orders to attack 2 days before at “Quatre Bras”.

Waterloo  set a Unified Europe back 150 years, and ultimately contributed to the cooking of both World Wars.

This is the outside of Napoleon’s house:

To get back it was either a very long walk (and downhill) or these steps.  YIKES!  No hand rails.  I kept my head down as best I could and just watched the steps.  There were a lot and it’s steep.

After all that work walking, it was time for a break and we found what appeared to be a nice spot.

We chose to eat outside, but the inside was very cute.  And the wifi was VERY good 🙂

It was time for a bite and to savour the flavour.

Pizza Napoleta (I think that was what it was called).  Really good - different but good 😉

With our strength restored we could carry on with our walk.

We were really having a nice day 🙂

We interrupt this live thread for a LIVE report.

We approached Naples

and watched the Costa ship pull ahead with the lines still attached.  We were trying to figure out what was going on when we realized that the Prinsendam was going to fit in the tiny space before it.  I do mean tiny.

The Prinsendam was slowly moving in

It was going to be a tight fit and since we had an ideal spot we could see the how watchful the officers and the captain was.

Looks nearly like we are going to run into Costa

How close can it be?  The agile Ms Prinsendam snuck in beautifully and skillfully.

This is from the TV and the bridge cam:

As we walk off the ship you can see how close they are.  Ms Prinsendam is tucked in closer on the dock.  Costa sticks out more.  There aren’t many ships that could fit in this spot and that’s probably why we are lucky enough to get a spot to dock here overnight.

It was very amazing to watch.  If Kazu had realized, she would have recorded.

Kudos to the Prinsendam team and the pilot.

Speaking of the agile Prinsendam who just docked at what is a tender port for most ships and docked yesterday at what was a tender port on the itinerary.....

when we were at Gala night dining with our Hotel Director, he commented that the days of small ships for HAL are not necessarily done.

HAL’s bragging of itineraries diminishes substantially as the Prinsendam does a lot of ports that the others can’t.  With it gone they have lost 50 ports according to him - I winked at him and said I think it is more like 100 - 300 and he agreed!!!!!!

He said that while no guarantees, they are looking at either a new build or buying and refurbishing a small ship to replace her in the next couple of years.

No guarantees of course, but they are taking a hard look at it.  (A Seabourn ship was mentioned in passing but not certain).

Did you know that the Pinnacle Class ships can’t even do the Panama?  Because of where the life boats were placed.  That’s why they are going around South America.

No other ship can do the Kiel Canal in the HAL fleet nor the rivers we are doing on this cruise, I believe.

I can’t promise anyone anything but it certainly sounded hopeful.

HAL used to let you buy them and then stopped (someone tried to buy one for me recently).  Prinsendam tends to set it’s own rules sometimes.

It’s a good thing 🙂. The FCC on here is very nice.  I believe she is on for the next segment.

Very interesting and good info.  The Pinnacle ships can't do the new, expanded Panama Canal locks?  That surprises me as I thought I heard even the Oasis class ships can go through the locks (but maybe not under the bridges).

Filling a Pinnacle ship on a "Round South America" cruise would require some very low pricing as only retirees can spend that much time on a ship.  I remember when Carnival had to move a ship that way a few years back and I think per-diems came down to about $39/night pp.  Sure wouldn't want to be living in a Pinnacle class inside cabin for that amount of time though!  Those insides are fine for one but awfully tight for two.

I sure hope HAL gets another small ship.

Another fine report and loved all the pictures. Glad you did well on those steep stone steps! Been there done that and I walked down going back and forth at angels to get down!! I remember seeing elderly couples with stride going down like it was nothing🙄

After all this walking we needed a break.

I REGRET buying the TOP INTERNET package.  I bought it so DH could watch his soccer on free time.  I had downloaded the app for our PVR at home but every time we tried on the ship it was a problem.

So we stopped and I told DH to bring the other IPAD.  (I treated myself to a new one when it was on sale and my old one had little memory left).  I had packed both  so he could watch soccer.

So beat from the walking we headed back to the ship and picked the other one up and found a spot and DH got to finally see a soccer game and I got to catch up a bit on my live thread and chat to people there and roll call members passing by.  We all gave each other tips on places we had found 😉

Lovely beverages were involved of course 😉

I realized I was hungry a bit and had asked for the menu but when I saw the servings I declined.  The waiter quickly brought me inside to show me they had smaller ones.  I chose the real ham from the area with the very old cheese they have here.  It was delish but I couldn’t finish it.

the waiter asked if he could pack it for me.  He was distressed and thought I didn’t like it.  LOL.

These are the ferries that are in port.  There were a ton of them.  We still haven’t figured out what the Batman ferry was all about.

Very interesting and good info.  The Pinnacle ships can't do the new, expanded Panama Canal locks?  That surprises me as I thought I heard even the Oasis class ships can go through the locks (but maybe not under the bridges).

I sure hope HAL gets another small ship.

It’s where they placed the life boats Arie.  Because of them, the width is too large as Bart explained it.

The only way the Pinnacle Class can go through the Panama is to drop all the lifeboats and have them trail behind and they would be charged extra for the additional length.

As Bart said, someone really screwed up.

I was amazed when he told me they couldn’t go through.

They have apparently redesigned the lifeboat location and lowering process for the new Pinnacle class Ryndam currently being built and that one will be able to navigate the Panama Canal.

This is good news.  The 2020-2021 over the holidays Antarctic cruise just was released sometime last week for booking.  We intend to book on board and have friends going with us.  I have their info so hopefully can set them up as well.

I know Princess won't let you buy FCD's for others.  Was really bummed about that.

Arie

Princess also lets you buy FCD's for others (most of the time), if they have sailed previously and have a Captain's Circle number.  They can even look someone up if you have address or phone number.  We bought eight FCD's on Princess in Dec. 2017 for our upcoming family cruise celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary.  We put the charge on our credit card.  Some say you need that person's credit card to buy them, but that was not the case with us.

That jives with what some others have reported Orlando as saying after he recently viewed the Prinsendam. If so, it would be WONDERFUL. The loss of the smaller ports and more intimate itineraries that the Prinsendam does is such a shame.
