Has anyone ever suspected HAL of diluted spirits?

Recommended Posts

Ok, here's the conspiratorial part - I suspect that HAL waters down their spirits -- or at least their most popular spirits. For example, I can SEE them putting a jigger of Cpt. Morgan rum in the highball glass full of ice but once they add the coke, I can't taste the rum. I SEE them make a Tito's Vodka martini (straight vodka) but it is so incredibly smooth that it's like drinking water (because perhaps it is mostly water?). Plus, I made GREAT use of my drink package - we used 10 drinks of our daily 15 drink limit - you'd think we'd feel something, right? The only time we got a buzz was when we had wine or sake.

Anyone else ever suspect this?

Good vodka is supposed to be smooth, and if you fill a glass with ice, ad a bit of rum and a lot of Cola, then obviously you will taste no rum.

so no. The diluting stories are in the vast majority tosh anyhow.

Have no idea, but they do substitute coffee liqueur for mint liqueur all the time in the Chocolate Mint Buzz. without asking or explaining.  That can be annoying.

No,  I actually think they are generous with their pours.  I usually have a G&T and I find them strong on board.  Not complaining though!

I’m sorry but what a ridiculous question IMO.

My answer? No

Like stated above by others!

Agree with most above.  Never had gotten the slightest idea or thought we were getting light pours.

No, I don't suspect HAL is watering down the liquor. They may have a lighter pour than other places, but that's not the same.

They didn't do this on my most recent cruise.  The chocolate Mint Buzz was exactly as described - no coffee liqueur.

No.  I've never thought that.

I didnt notice it at the beginning of the cruise; however, on the last days we were ordering obscure drinks/brands just to get some flavor. . . mostly at the pool-area bars. Entertainment venues were hit & miss - I was drinking patron at Billboards - they ran out, brought out a "new" bottle that tasted like nothing so I switched to Cabo.

believe me, this is not an uneducated hypothesis.

No.

As a matter of fact, I find the drinks to be a little strong for me; I need to be careful standing up after having one.

But then, I am a "cheap date."  My tolerance for alcohol is not high and a glass of a good wine, a beer, or one cocktail is about my limit.

Getting back to this - I looked up the recipe for this drink and there is a bit of confusion:

Chocolate Buzz Recipe

10 - 12 oz chocolate milk
2 shots Kahlua® coffee liqueur
2 shots Irish cream

Pour chocolate milk into a large glass. Add 2 shots of kahlua and 2 shots of irish cream. Serve cold.

and

Ingredients to use:
11 oz Chocolate Mix   Chocolate Mix
2 shots Coffee Liqueur   Coffee Liqueur
2 shots Irish Cream   Irish Cream
Directions:
Mix together with crushed ice in a glass and garnish with mint leaves

So, I guess depending on where the bartender learned his recipe, it could contain coffee liqueur.

In this same vein.... this last cruise we ordered a Caribbean Cooler, one of the recipes they teach in the mixology class onboard ( so we had the printed recipe), at 3 different bars with numerous bartenders and none did it the exact same way. One even strained the ice off the drink which was curious. Some added 80 proof rum on top. Some added Midori instead of peach schnapps. It was quite a fun adventure. All were good however.

No, on the few times that I have ordered spirits,  (always rye and soda), I have never suspected a diluted product or even a light pour.

I very much doubt that HAL would dilute their spirits.  An over or under pour is always possible but less likely as most bars have portion control.

No.  Drank a lot of straight shots when we had the EBP on the Rotterdam in February.   They were full strength.

The drink is Chocolate MINT buzz, where the Coffee liqueur is replaced by mint liqueur...

The Bar List shows "Chocolate Mint Buzz" on every cruise I've ordered it, as noted  by Despegue.
