patbrown Posted April 14, 2019 #1 Share Posted April 14, 2019 We will be ending our Basel to Amsterdam Avalon river cruise this October. Unfortunately we will be only spending one night in Amsterdam before catching our flight home. Any suggestions for a hotel close to dock where we can store luggage prior to check-in? Thanks in advance. Pat

Thanks in advance. Pat All hotels store your luggage prior to check in. The dock is on a busy street across from train station. The Movenpick and Doubletree are next to the dock. We also used Hotel Estherea. Located on a lovely canal. Walkable to many neighborhoods including Anne Frank House and the museums
3rdCoastFan Posted April 14, 2019 #4 Share Posted April 14, 2019 We stayed at the Kimpton DeWitt before starting our cruise. If you're planning on taking the train from Centraal to Schipol, I would definitely recommend it. It barely took us 5 minutes to walk to the hotel from the train station (despite dragging our luggage along). We were able to check-in early but we were assured that we could have left our luggage otherwise. The downside is that it's not necessarily close to the dock. If you were planning on using a taxi or Uber, though, to go from the boat to the hotel, I'd still suggest the Kimpton. I left a more complete review here:
patbrown Posted April 14, 2019 Author #5 Share Posted April 14, 2019 Thanks all for your help.! Just trying to maximize our brief time in Amsterdam.. Pat
knitter Posted June 26, 2019 #6 Share Posted June 26, 2019 We stay at the Renaissance in Amsterdam (4 nights in early June). Not far from port area, though you need to cab there. Convenient to Centraal Station for tram and/or train anywhere. Movenhotel is really cut off from the city across train tracks- it seemed like it would be quite a hike to get anywhere. There is also a lot of construction in the area that impacts traffic and pedestrian flow.
cruiselvr04 Posted July 4, 2019 #7 Share Posted July 4, 2019 We just returned and stayed at the Doubletree. Walked from the boat to the hotel with our bags and just a short walk to the tram. Very easy to get around with this as your hotel.
Ine Posted July 5, 2019 #8 Share Posted July 5, 2019 Riverboats dock at various places, most of them close to Centraal Station. So any hotel in that vicinity will be o.k.
subtchr Posted July 6, 2019 #9 Share Posted July 6, 2019 Although we haven’t experienced it yet, we have Banks Mansion booked for our pre-cruise night next week. We are very excited, the hospitality sounds amazing in all reviews. Complimentary snacks and drinks in the lounge and rooms, and full breakfast. Seems to be a very convenient location, too. We've stayed at Banks Mansion 3 times - can't fault a thing. Great location, close to everything. Hospitality is second to none, and the afternoon wine-and-cheese reception is a great way to top off the afternoon. If you like fresh seafood, take a look at the restaurant John Dory. It's two canals over - a little over a 5-minute walk - with beautifully presented dishes in a comfortable, casual atmosphere.
djh1959 Posted July 10, 2019 #11 Share Posted July 10, 2019 We have also stayed at Banks Mansion and loved it. We will be back staying there in October and cannot wait. For seafood, we loved Lucien, which was actually recommended by Banks Mansion.
subtchr Posted July 13, 2019 #12 Share Posted July 13, 2019 Popping back in, as we are checking out of Banks Mansion now to head to our ship. Amazing stay, wish it was longer. The hospitality and service are second to none. As @Needzavacation noted, the wine and cheese reception at 5 is just lovely. Easy access to the tram, and good location for exploring. For those interested, we bought 3-day transit passes at the airport (€28 each), and used the train to Centraal, then the tram to Banks. Then used the trams all day, went to the Nemo Museum, and tonight to the Latin District area, and stumbled on a wonderful place for Mediterranean food for dinner, Bazar. We topped off the night with some shopping at that European marvel, Primark. Checking out this morning and heading to the Avalon Vista, so glad to have another couple days to explore this amazing city!
Mike R 2018 Posted August 8, 2019 #13 Share Posted August 8, 2019 One option may be the Pulitzer Amsterdam. 5 Star accomodations. Great canal-view rooms in the historic and beautiful area of Jordaan. The hotel owns a beautiful (built in 1908) canal boat which is available for canal tours- which are two hours in length and simply grand. Winston Churchill and the Queen of the Netherlands toured the city in that boat post-WWII in 1946. Both restuarants on the premises are superb as is the hotel's bar (TripAdvisor ratings). Our room was originally a pub in the 1700's. If you only plan on visiting Amsterdam once, this may be the way to do it 😊. We walked from our hotel to both city hall and the Rijksmuseum- and we're 65+. Staff were superb. ...View from our room at night. The "Tourist" canal boat is in the foreground. Mike R 2018 Posted August 9, 2019 #15 Share Posted August 9, 2019 Found two more pics that may be of interest to those looking for a grand hotel to stay at while in Amsterdam... Our canal-view room (pardon the suitcases and general mess 😊.
