Ocean Ready is just for online check-in

Ocean Play is used onboard for interactive games

Ocean View is for videos only

Ocean Compass is for locating other people and wayfinder plus chat

Ocean Now is for ordering onboard

Ocean Casino...

So you can decide on your own what you need. I´d say Ocean Now and Ocean Compass are the minimum you need onboard.

What I don´t really understand is that the Princess Patter is in Ocean Concierge which is browser based and not an app. This should be included in the Ocean Compass app.

The Entertainment Schedule is in Ocean Now as well as the old legacy browser application.  So far, I have only found Shipboard Account details in that legacy app and nowhere in the new OCEAN apps.

IMO, they need a single-signon approach into OCEAN Ready - or whichever - and then from the HOME screen/page we ought to be able to have a master link to all other apps/features and not have to be jumping around trying to find things and sign-in different ways, etc.

Have not yet ordered my first drink free on OCEAN Now, but plan to before EOC.

Please let us know how that works. I was unfortunately not able to order a drink because it always thought I was either in my cabin or in the art gallery!

Agreed. Some consolidation will go a long ways. Lots of cool features but they are scattered and it’s not totally intuitive to figure out what app does what. Once I found the function I was looking for it generally worked quite well but it was usually the 2nd or 3rd app I tried before finding it. 5 OCEAN apps...feels like there needs to be maybe 2 or 3. Ocean ready for pre-board, another for on-board, and maybe keep the casino one separate but give me the food/beverage, schedule, and GPS in one.

Drink ordering worked fine for my wife and I at the loungers around MUTS on CB 5/18-5/25. Used it multiple times. Worked every time. Never tried it anywhere else.

Two weeks ago on the Regal we still had to use the Ocean Concierge website for the Princess Patter (and to individualize my own schedule plus the onboard account).

Ocean Now only let me order drinks or stuff for the cabin (bathrobe, hangers...).

The first drink order didn´t went well as we were sitting at Bellini´s and it showed me eithere there or on the Piazza. By the moment I´ve ordered I obviously was located in the Piazza. The Bellini bartender asked us whether we want to order anything and we told him we tried out the app. He said he had no order and called down to the Piazza. Then our drink was delivered.

The second order we were in the Piazza and the bartender was able to find us.

I never was able to locate my DH but he could locate me. And the app showed that I was standing next to him 🤣.

My wife was in deck 9 stairwell for hours supposedly.  It always misses the exact cabin by one or two but NBD.

as a matter of fact, they suggest switching to Airplane Mode as soon as you get on the ship.  There are a number of cool things

For those who have used Medallion, is it mandatory to go to Airplane Mode to use this?  Airplane Mode cuts off cellular reception (that's why Airplane Mode exists).  It's much more important to our group to be available via cellular due to family issues at home than to use "cool things".  (We turn off Data While Roaming so don't incur those horrendous charges.)

No, it is not mandatory to go to Airplane Mode. It could care less. Warning passengers to go to Airplane Mode reduces people complaining about the Cell Phone Bill if they don't.

It is a tradeoff if you want to risk paying a large cell phone bill during an unlikely emergency, vs paying for internet and being free to communicate through apps or email.

Turning Data Roaming Off should get you where you need to be.

Just completed our Ocean Ready set up thanks to our 13-year old granddaughter.  After completion, she commented there were way too many steps and that Princess should make a more user friendly process especially given the fact that not everyone is computer/technology literate.  Amen!

You might consider that a contact from home comes in the way of email, WhatsApp msg, etc.  And then you call.

Actually, if you are on Medallion Net, WhatsApp works on your smartphone and you can text AND call using internet.  No need to make a cellular call while sailing on ocean as it would be very very expensive.

Just completed a survey from Princess about the Medallion - what I had heard about it, from where, what features I was aware of, etc.  Several times they stressed that the medallion would work just like a proximity fob for a car.  Is that so?  In the comment box, I reported that my car does not automatically unlock as I approach it.  I have to click the unlock icon on the fob or touch a certain spot on the door handle or tailgate. I also asked what positive action would I need to take to lock my cabin door on the ship if the door would unlock when the medallion is in proximity.  I asked what would happen if I walk by my room on the way to somewhere else and I do not intend to enter my room.

Those who have used the medallion - how does this work?  How do you lock the door when you leave and what keeps the door locked should you linger in the corridor to talk to someone or if you walk by your cabin on the way to somewhere else?

I think I read somewhere in all of this long thread that it will unlock your door should you pass by but will lock it again fairly soon afterward.  Can anyone confirm that?

Totally agree with another poster that five apps is way too many to have to deal with.  Come on, Princess, surely you can streamline this process!

I can confirm that. And if you're a super slow walker like my husband it may lock again before you even get to the door.

Further question on the usage of the apps.  Do you have to purchase wifi on the ship to use them or is that free?  Same question regarding using WhatsApp while on the ships net.  Does it incur data charges or go against some type of minutes plan?  I wasn't planning on using email, texting, or phone the first few days of our cruise when we are at Hubbard Glacier and Glacier Bay.  However, I'd like to be able to have the functionality working for the purposes of learning what medallion cruising can do. I've never purchased wifi and don't know if it is worth it on an itinerary with three American ports in it.

Keep in mind that in order to communicate using WhatsApp, unlike for example Skype, all users must be registered with WhatsApp, i.e., have the app installed on your device.

There is no charge to do so. It’s simply a requirement.

Although not an issue on Princess, Skype works only on WiFi and not on cellular.

Before leaving on a trip I make certain everyone I anticipate communicating with during the trip has WhatsApp installed on their device.

WhatsApp is completely free of charge while Skype is mostly so.

<<DOUBLE POST - forgot to check "notify me of replies".........

I apologize in advance, but a search didn't give me what I need, and I just couldn't read through 18 pages! <g>

We are booked on a Crown Princess cruise from FLL in November 2019. I have gotten nothing from Princess about this medallion we apparently will be using for that cruise. I checked the Princess web site for my booked cruise page and saw no mention of that either, although I have completed all my "check in" that I can do this far out.

Do I somehow have to contact Princess to order medallions for us? Or will it maybe be automatically sent once we are closer to the sailing date, as in after I've made the final payment and can print our boarding docs and luggage tags? That would make sense to me, but I'm too lazy to call Princess to ask.....😉

Thanks,

 Doug

Crown Princess does not "become Medallion" until 7/24/19 so they are probably concentrating on the folks who will sail then.

My notice to do something about medallions for my August cruise came through my cruise personalizer. The check-in part on the menu turned into a medallion shortly before final payment. There were then instructions on what to do - there's a video to help.  This notice may not show up until 60-75 days (~ after final payment) out from your sailing. You will then need to download the ocean ready app from Google or Apple, fill in info, scan passports, upload security pix, etc. When you have made the app totally happy (easy experience for some, bigger challenge for others as software is still quirky), you can order your medallions. They will be shipped to you 2-4 weeks before sailing.

If you are unable to make the app happy, do not despair as the medallions can be picked up at the port or you can contact the Navigator help line (1-844-525-0942, 0500-2100 PDT Monday - Friday and 0600-1800 Saturday and Sunday) and see if they can fix it for you.

WhatsApp.  Facebook.  Nope.

Maybe I’m not understanding your point.

When connecting via MedallionNet, I use WhatsApp regularly on Princess.

Wife uses FB regularly on Princess.
