If we’re not doing self carry would a 11:40 am flight work? If we don’t take this the next nonstop is 5:30pm.

Its only a little more than an hour to OIA. It should be ok, they will let you off early based on your flight time.

Arriving when to port? Plus clearing customs, getting to car and loaded, plus check in and security at OIA???? I personally would go for the later flight, enjoy a leisurely breakfast, and not be stressed by making an 11:40 flight.

If you are NOT doing self assist off the ship, then this flight time would be too close for me!

You “might” be okay not doing self assist, but you would need to get the “lowest” luggage tag number and have your transportation already prebooked and lined up waiting.

Even then...I would still be stressed...

Should be fine if you are off the ship on your way to the airport by 8:30am.

Why would you need low luggage tag numbers if you are doing self assist? I thought the luggage tags numbers were only relevant if you were not doing self assist walk off. That is the way it worked with us on HOTS a few weeks ago.

Have you thought about doing the Kennedy Space Center VIP tour with drop off at the airport?  Rather than worrying about making an earlier flight, we decided to book this and stretch our vacation a bit longer and see something that should be interesting.

The OP stated they were NOT doing self assist (or they called it self carry)

I misread your post. I was reading it like you were saying that you still use the tags even if you do self assist.

You have at best a 50-50 shot of making your plane with an 11:40 departure, since you'd need to be in the airport at least an hour before that. We sail out of Port Canaveral every other month, never do self assist, always use a porter, and drive past the airport on every trip. There are times when we are well past the airport exit by 9:30, and times when we don't even get out of the parking garage at the port by 10:30. All it takes is one snag in Customs or a problem with offloading luggage to back everything up in the terminal for 1-2 hours. There is only one line for customs if you don't use a porter, and that can snake you around the terminal for 30-45 minutes before you ever get to customs. We've watched people from our balcony who did self assist and were still in line in the terminal when we and our porter were exiting customs. On our last two cruises passengers were held on the ship because of problems with customs or luggage dockside until 10:45 (Oasis in January) and 10:00 (Enchantment in March). We've also experienced long traffic delays (~5-10 MPH for 10+ miles) due to accidents and construction on the 528.

If you are going to take the chance, at least use the cruise line's airport transfer service. That choice dramatically increases your odds of making you flight.

Do they offer the option to check luggage for your flight on cruises out of Orlando like they do in Fort Lauderdale?

Normally they do offer Luggage Valet out of Port Canaveral on cruises of 7-nights or longer.

Off topic sorry  do you know if the ramp off the 528 at 95 is going to be closed only at night or are they detouring folks during the day as well?  Driving down next Monday but I think we will just take US 1 instead of 95

As far as local media is reporting, the detours are going on 24/7 until the bridge is fixed. The estimates on the local Fox station are for ~3 weeks. Both the on and off ramps heading south, and the on and off ramps heading north on 95 are closed at the 528. If I was coming from the north, I'd probably get off at Port St. John and take 1 from there. If you're coming from the south, I believe the closest exit off of 95 is Industry Rd.

I agree with all that you said above, except for the part in red.  My BIL had the same theory, for a transfer from Miami Cruise Port to Fort Lauderdale airport but they sat on the bus for an hour waiting for it to be full.  They had a car booked at FLL  and were driving to Orlando for Disney.  His words, never again only a taxi.

Side note, he totally swears by the porter line at Port Canaveral.  He pre-tips a $20 and says they are through as quick as possible.

I wouldn’t do it. Not unless you do self-assist.

Not it only could you run into problems with customs in disembarking, or getting to the airport, you might have problems at the airport itself. With passengers from multiple cruise ships and tourists from the theme parks, MCO is known for its security backups. They advise you to get to the airport at least two hours before your flight. Sometimes, during busy holiday seasons, they advise three hours ahead of time.

We love New Smyrna. We go fishing at the Dunes and in the inlet as often as possible. BTW, the local ABC affiliate just did a piece on the detours and said they will be starting at 8:00 this evening.

We always use a porter. We have a running joke with every porter we use that people who spend thousands on a cruise, hundreds on booze, and untold $$ in casinos, can't seem to find a sawbuck or two to avoid an hour long slog through the customs lines. We are usually out by our car within 10 minutes of hailing a porter.

Take the later flight and book a day room at the Hyatt in the airport...best way to end your vacation without rushing or worrying about whether or not you will make your flight.

We’ve done this many times if we had a later flight.  Some family members napped and others continued the fun on the roof deck pool.😀
