On one of the news sites there is a snippet on Australia’s own Scenic Eclipse about to go to sea trials. Will make its way south and float around for a while. Includes Antarctica, $$$$$.

I will avoid this one. I like the idea of holidays amongst people from different cultures. My mother tried one of their river cruises and was underwhelmed. She said they were “aping the gentry”.

Approximately 30 expedition vessels are on order to comply with the Polar Code & for use in high latitudes.

According to the advertising blurbs these vessels are all some how special - but are they anymore than specially built to the Polar Code.  The ruddish put out by the tour operators should be taken with a grain of salt.

Some are even called Yachts - yet a yacht is a PRIVATE vessel.

Nearly all are over-running there delivery dates due to having to comply with the code in yards not used to all the new requirements.

Scenic Eclipse is still to be handed over - we will have to wait until August to see if it sails this time after multiple delays due to the yard going bust.

In the meantime other vessels are completing & operating.

Hanseatic Nature a slightly smaller vessel with 230 passenger capacity is cruising in Europe in May 2019.

The vast majority of the current expedition vessels operating in the plus 60 latitudes will slowly disappear to other duties or scrap, as 2022 approaches.

One Ocean Expeditions has just had two chartered vessels owned by Russia made unavailable for Antarctic 2019/20 season.  Is this Polar Code related?

 

Hondius [PC6] has departed builders yard in Split & is underway in Med. on way to Vlissingen for owners Oceanwide Expeditions - eta 1st June & maiden cruise to Spitzbergen 3rd June.

Agree, my son reckons the Scenic Eclipse venture will send Scenic broke.   They will have trouble filling their cabins at the published prices.

Another  question is  , that in offering a 5 star experience they will need 5 star staff to provide it .  5 star staff are highly trained, command high salaries and are in high demand .

If the staff and line do not deliver quality, they will definitely not be in business for long.

Ocean Endeavour was built in Poland as "Konstantin Simonov" - a Ro-Ro ferry in 1982 - 1 of 7 similar vessels.

Several of the class have already been scrapped & most will be as they approach there 40th year survey.

At her next survey, if it takes place, Ocean Endeavour will loose her Ice Class rating as she will not comply with the new Polar Code now in force. 

There is no such thing as a permanent charter - it's a time charter.  

One Ocean have found out that even a time charter can be cancelled - loosing 2 ships that they will no longer be able to operate.  

Charterers of Ocean Endeavour are selling cruises into 2021 & this could be OK given the ships build date, but if her next survey is before then - those cruises will not happen.  

The owners who bought her in 2014 will need to do a very extensive & expensive repair to pass survey & continue operating the vessel.

Mic - Many of the expedition vessels are owned by small companies that may only have 1 ship.

They maybe owned in Russia through one of their affiliate - like the One Ocean ex research ships.

Some are built & then chartered out on long term Time Charter by the owner - ie Greg Mortimer owned by SunStone Ships.

In most cases the vessel is then managed by a Ship Management company, but they may not do it all with crew management by the operator.  It varies a lot.  Who is responsible for keeping inside the new regulations can also vary.

The One Ocean experience may wake some of the managers up to the Polar Code.

Ocean Endeavour is currently in Las Palmas since early April.  She maybe laid up until her next season in Northern hemisphere or could be undergoing repairs.

Mighty Cruise ships on channel 72 this evening (Saturday) features the Ocean Endeavour.

 

Apparently made in 2017, but will be interesting to see if they mention compliance with the code.
