Nice to Monte Carlo

We are embarking in Monte Carlo in November, and flying into Nice two days ahead. I have mobility issues, have a leg brace and a cane, and cannot walk very far. We are trying to decide whether to get a hotel for the two nights in Nice or in Monte Carlo, and to figure out how to get from Nice to Monte Carlo. Does anyone have suggestions as to the best way to get from Nice to Monte Carlo with luggage?

Given a choice of staying in Nice or Monte Carlo we would always choose Nice.  We plead guilty to having a bias against MC which we have never thought lives up to its reputation.  As to how to get to your ship, with the mobility limitations and luggage the obvious answer is to either get a taxi or arrange for a private transfer.  Neither will be cheap, but it is the best solution.  If you stay at a decent hotel in Nice the Concierge or Front desk can arrange for a transfer if you give them notice the previous day.  A few months ago somebody recommended a specific transfer company (they seemed to have reasonable prices) and hopefully somebody will post that name and link.

 

As to staying in Nice, staying on the Promanade or very close would make the most sense with your walking issue.  The Promanade is very wide, flat, walkable, and there are frequent benches.  There are some decent hotels (a bit expensive) such as the Negresco and Meridian which offer near perfect locations.   Nice also gives you lots of options for your free time.  We love the Flower Market, especially in the morning.  There are also several decent museums which are great for museum lovers and an alternative rainy day option for all.  Nice also has many excellent restaurants, its attractive Promanade d'Anglais and the Old Town (where they have the Flower Market)….although that area might be too difficult with your limitations.

Thanks for your advice. We will look at hotels on the Promenade. Are there restaurants within easy walking distance too?

There is no lack of resturants on the Promenade or anywhere in Nice.  For hotels we also like the Hotel Suisse and the La Perouse which are on the Promenade and very near the Flower market.  The Meridien is in the center of everything.  Just look them all up in Google maps.

As Marazul said, there is no lack of restaurants (in all price ranges) around Nice.  I normally hesitate to recommend specific restaurants because chefs tend to come and go (unless they own the facility) and any restaurant is only as good as its chef and related staff.  Many years ago we had one of the 2 or 3 best dinner experiences of our lives in Chantecler which is the formal restaurant (with 2 Michelin Stars) in the Negresco hotel (located in the center of the Promanade.  But the Chef at the time, Dominique Le Stenc left the restaurant (soon after getting the 2nd star) and opened his own small place (La Merenda) in the old town area.  Ironically, he totally moved away from Haute Cuisine to providing a small menu of mostly local/regional cooking.  The next time we are Nice for dinner we would somehow try to get a reservation in Le Merenda although I have heard this can be nearly impossible unless you "know somebody."  

 

Chanteclar has maintained its 2 Star status and is certainly one of those elegant over-the-top kind of restaurants with prices to match.
