Hi everyone

This will be my first trip (mini) on Princess (December on the Ruby). Just a 3 nighter with my sister. She only travels on Princess and I have never travelled on Princess (only NCL, Cunard & P & O).

I have noticed that I cant see any coffee makers in the room (we are in a club class mini suite). Are there no coffee or tea makers in the rooms? Can you request one?

I love a coffee/tea first thing in the morning - are my options to either bring a flask down from buffet the night before or ask for room service ?

No coffee makers in the room except Sapphire Princess leaving from Southampton. You will have to do room service or get instant coffee and a heating element, which are hard to find.

Bring your own!  I make coffee with my AeroPress each morning.  Have a little grinder and I grind the beans, then use hot water I request from room service.  Amazing and wonderful coffee right there and then!  AeroPresses are cheap, work great, are easy to use and clean up quick.  No, I don't work for them or sell them.  Remember: life's too short to drink bad coffee!

Two tricks I do sometimes:  I bring instant Starbucks coffee, put 2 of them into my thermal mug and walk to the Horizon Court and fill with hot water from the dispenser and add some cream.  I did this every early morning and then walk around the ship in the morning before everyone else woke up, just wonderful.  The princess coffee is just ok, I admit I'm a Starbucks snob, I know not everyone likes the burnt taste.  I also bought the coffee package and all of those too!  What's not to love on a cruise!

The other trick I did in the afternoon was fill my mug with ice and fill with their brewed coffee, add some sugar and cream and instant iced coffee!  I must have drank 50 of these the last cruise!

If you bother to check the the Princess FAQs, would would have seen that the following are prohibited- "

  • "Hookah and Water Hookah Pipes, candles and incense, strike-anywhere matches, clothing irons, heating pads, hot plates, kettles, coffee makers, toasters and other electronic cooking appliances."

DON

You are quite correct. I know these items are prohibited.

The first day onboard, we request 2 carafes of hot water.  We bring the Starbucks instant packets (get them at Costco).  I also bring D'Vita cappuccino to mix in my coffee.  We keep the carafes and in the morning I walk up to Lido and fill the two empty pots with hot water.  I also grab 2 cups.  The cups you get with room service are really small.  Two sips and the coffee in the cup is gone. I might sneak a carafe hot pot on board, and have instant hot water without going to Lido.  I'm tempted.

if you order water or coffee from room service order the night before, something impossible to get thru to room service in the morning, just rings busy.

We do order room service every day for breakfast... we order 8 cups of coffee for 2 people, many times they bring 2 pots.

We just got off the Ruby, and put out the room service card every night with the time requested, and the coffee and pastries were delivered either on time, or a little early. never a problem. Enjoy.

One of you make the short trip to the International Cafe and purchase fresh brewed coffee or one of the espresso drinks. This coffee is much better than the room service coffee which is prepared from a lower quality liquid concentrate. The I.C. has carry trays. While you are at the I.C. you can pick up some Danish, doughnuts, etc..  No charge for food items.

For tea you have a choice. The free tea is Twinnings and Lipton. There is a selection of different flavours. You can just take a few bags of your choice from the buffet and then order hot water from room service, or just have room service deliver.

I am sure that everyone else on the ship doesn't care that you have brought a fire hazard on board the ship.  There is a good reason for most of the forbidden items on the ship even though some passengers don't care about the problems they cause.

DON

Yeah, I know what you mean.  There's certain areas I can't go to due to people smoking--casino for one.  And how about those passengers that lick their fingers every where on the ship and spread noro to other passengers.  There's plenty of hazardous things people do to make life miserable for others.  You took it as if I was going to do it.  I'm not two-years old, been cruising a long, long time.

Or ask your Sister to do a Coffee run. I wake up a lot earlier than my wife. On my way back to the Cabin after a morning stroll, I bring back lots of coffee (IC if I have a coffee card, or Buffet).

I am a coffeeholic too, but we always call room service when we get up in the morning. There are generally two numbers for room service but only 1 is published. Our cabin attendant always tells us the unpublished number. The only ship that we had trouble getting through on was the Emerald. Recent cruises on both Royal, Regal and Crown all had good response to the room service published number

For years we just used the card on the door the night before for coffee.  They were always on time, if not a minute or two early.  On our last cruise on the Regal we were able to order our needs on our phone app and it worked beautifully.

so, basically the OM made no difference in that situation as far as getting your coffee

I guess you could order breakfast from the theatre while waiting for the show ?

Yes, other than someone could not take the door hanger off of the door.

Thank you all so much for your replies. Buckeye Mark, that Aeropress looks fantastic. I'm in New Zealand & don't think I've ever seen one, but you can bet that I am going looking for one now (not for the cruise, but just because it looks like something I would use). Mdpseattle - Starbucks do instant sachets??  Wow we are really missing out down here in NZ...I am on the hunt for those too. You all have no idea how much I want a Costco in NZ!!!!

Sending my sister for coffee would go down wonderfully (ha ha) - she doesn't drink hot drinks so she would probably arrive back with a Danish!.

Good to know that there is an un published room service number, we just use the one on the phone. We also put out an order the night before, but will ask the room steward if there is another number as well.

I don't use a cell home at home - so these new apps are of not value to us.

very off topic - but do a search for AeroPress recipes and you'll find there is a whole world of APress fans out there sharing ideas on how to use this little guy to make amazing coffee.  I hope you'll enjoy!

They didn’t take my kettle away on my recent cruise on the Majestic.

It is my responsibility, lol, to go to the buffet the first thing in the am, get our coffee, some fruit, pastries and we always take our tray from home, as none are available aboard.  My wife has a shoe in the door, so that I only have to push the door open, a few moments before I get back to the cabin...apparently she knows the exact time I will return...
