Was thinking a Sept- Oct 2020 cruise leaving NJ. Hurricans??

Living in Halifax, almost would be certainly be one of your ports, there is a risk of hurricane from June to November. We don't get them as frequently as the Caribbean or southern states but it can happen. If there was a hurricane that could impact your cruise you would most likely end up with a modified itinerary.

Some hurricanes "blow themselves out" further up the North American coast or out to sea in the northern Atlantic. We've had rough seas due to this twice but no altered ports; however just as in Caribbean, it can happen.  If you don't want to risk that it's marginally "safer" too book in July or early to mid August although your choices will be more limited and you will lose all chances of seeing fall color.  I wouldn't worry about it though

You can't predict the weather. I've done at least ten New England/Canada cruises in the past 12 years between August and October out of New York/New Jersey and Never had to deal with hurricanes. They do happen, but the cruise lines will make changes to avoid them.
