Visa no longer required for Brazil

Recommended Posts

For those of you that have not read about this, effective tomorrow, June 17, 2019, visas will no longer be required for tourists from the U.S., Canada, Japan and Australia.  A valid passport will enable you to stay in Brazil for up to 90 days (with the possibility of extending your stay to up to 180 days - with approval).

Thought this would be of interest for those booked on cruises that stop in Rio.

Yeah, great news and long time coming (the reciprocity).  While we have no cruises planned at the moment that touch Brazil, we are taking a dogleg air route to Africa this September which transits through Sao Paolo.  While in the past transits didn't require a visa (and you hoped you air carrier understood that), if there was a misconnect or cancellation onward, you were stuck at the airport.  We'd planned to purchase eVisas just to have a Plan B, so this change which was announced earlier this year saves us a good chuck of change.

I'd also note that there are a number of cruises (like the one we were on Explorer in February) which start in Buenos Aires with a popular pre-cruise option of going to Iguazu Falls...for which you'd have need the Brazil visa to get to the best locations.

People from Britain also do not need a visa for Briazil either, but have to have 6 months remaining on their passport and a return ticket.

We have taken advantage of that.  My DH is a dual citizen and he has used his British passport for Brazil while I've had to purchase the visa (that still has 7 years before it expires and we have no plans on being in Brazil).  When we return to the U.S., he uses his U.S. passport - it works perfectly!  Just happy for those that will not need it in the future!.
