Does Excursion Cost More Booking on Ship?

Recommended Posts

I know I can call and reserve excursions and pay for them on the ship IF you have the $50 per port excursion perk.  I have done this before.

I could be wrong but when I did it before the base price was more than I remembered when I reserved it.   The $50 credit per excursion and 10% off was taken however.

So my question is if you reserve an excursion - so you can pay with your OBC on the ship could the price be more than if you would have paid it to begin with?

Thanks for any responses.  I was going to do this once with the dining package to use my OBC only to discover it cost more if you bought it on the ship than online!

Often the excursion prices will go up a few dollars when booked on board. The price you pay if you book it and pay after boarding is told to you when you reserve the excursion. It is not more in that case.

Never noticed any difference in price. Unlike other lines, NCL does not bombard you with "pre-cruise sales", so booking onboard is o.k. (unless the price goes up before you cruise).

I haven't found that there is a unexpected increase specifically for booking on board.   However the price you pay on board may be more than when you went through shorex in Miami because the price had increased at some point in between

Most of my excursions have increased, some quite a bit.  For example the GOT tour for Dubrovnik was $89 pp when booked however it’s $129 pp today. 12 ports could add several hundred $ If original booked prices not honored onboard. Should the original prices when I booked not be honored, I believe I can cancel the ship’s excursions 48 hours in advance. I do have screenshots for all excursions and I was assured the prices the day I booked would be what I am charged onboard however shore excursions rep was not able to send an invoice to include booked prices.  The today prices are so inflated that even with the double shore excursion credit (distinctive voyage and fas), latitude discount and obc, it would be less $ to just diy.  They were actually almost  “free” when booked so hopefully that will hold true.

I reread your question and see what you’re saying. I’ve not seen much difference in onboard prices to online pre cruise prices if you’re talking about what’s offered just prior to sailing vs onboard.  The big fluctuations I’ve seen are more season to season.  If sailing at beginning of a season then you might see a big change like I mentioned above but otherwise it’s typically about the same onboard. Sorry I thought you were talking about shore excursion perk.  I’m pretty sure with the perk prebooking/paying onboard that the prices are honored at prices the day you booked vs what prices might be onboard.

Depending on the cruise itinerary you may want to book in advance as many of the popular excursions, like the helicopter tours in Alaska, may  be sold out by cruise time.

Thanks everyone for the responses.  The main thing I want to do is use up some of my OBC for excursions instead of gifting it to the casino. But I do have one more question - if an excursion is $35 or $70 for 2 - would I still get $50 off?  Or is it limited to the cost of one excursion.  Since it says per cabin I would think I would still get the $50 off (plus 10% discount being gold)

I always reserve our tours through NCL Shorex without prepaying and just explain I have OBC, shore excursion credit and Platinum + discount that I want to use to pay. I don’t like to pay for anything in advance then have to wait for refunds. I then take a screenshot the day I reserve the tour with the price at the time. There have been many times the price I was charged on the ship was more money. I just go to shore excursions desk, show them the screenshot with the price when I booked and they adjust it to what I originally reserved. They know the date when you reserved it and what the price was so they just credit your account. This has been my experience on the last 3 NCL cruises.

When we took the Jewel out of Singapore I went to book an excursion in the first stop, Koh Samui, Thailand, as soon as we got on the ship.  They had eliminated any tours involving elephants so there were only 3 listed and all were sold out.  Was looking forward to watch monkeys pick coconuts, was not to be.
