What to do in Mgarr, Malta

Recommended Posts

Our ship will be stopping here from 8a-3p after a full day stop in Valetta.

I have read a few of the shore excursions since I am not able to find any reviews of this port.

Do you have any recommendations?

Thank you.🙂

What have you got planned in Malta? We were just there May 28th and did an amazing private group tour...will give you info if you need it.

Do you mean Mgarr in Gozo - there is a place called Mgarr in Malta too?

The itinerary on HAL says Mgarr (Victoria). The day before we're in Valetta until 6am the next day and at 8am we're in Mgarr.

In Valetta we plan to take the shore excursion to Mdina, not sure what else it includes. Then spen the rest of the day/night walking around Valetta.

In Mgarr, we're not sure what to do. What do you recommend?

That is Gozo then, it's very close to Malta and is actually part of Malta

We recently visited there and did the HOHO bus as we're not usually keen on ship excursions and there didn't seem to be anything which appealed to us anyway. The bus tour was actually pretty good in that it covered a huge area of the island but the commentary was very informative and we learned so much about a place we previously knew little about. The bus picks you up right where the tenders drop you and there are two routes which overlap in the capital (Victoria). We opted not to get off in Victoria as the bus we were on was automatically switching to the other route and we also wanted to make sure we got back to the port in time.

If you don't mind HOHO buses (and I know some people hate them) it was a good way to get an overview of the island at a pretty reasonable price https://city-sightseeing.com/en/64/gozo/66/hop-on-hop-off-gozo

Are you sure you want to do a ship excursion in Valletta ? We saw and did more with Malta Film Tours than we ever imagined possible which included the walled city of Mdina. After our 5+ hour tour we still had plenty of time to walk around Valletta.

We love to take the hoho bus everywhere we go. It gives us the option to see more without having to walk so much. But in this case, our ship docks at 8:00am, so if they have to tender, that means it will be a while before we can get off the ship. Not sure how HAL does tenders, we have never had to use one on the cruises we have taken with them. The ship leaves at 3:00pm, so that's a concern. But it looks like you were able to do both loops without getting off the bus?

Ashland... we always take the ship's shore excursion due to the concern of not getting back on time, but in Valetta we wouldn't mind using a private company since the ship doesn't leave until 6:00am the next day. I will look into Malta Film Tours and see what they have to offer. Thank you very much for your suggestion.

Just for info our tour started around 10.00am and we probably spent 2-2.5 hours, having done both routes (without getting off the bus). Tendering should be quick as they only have one ship at a time in port so I think you would have no problem doing the tour. The buses and people selling the tickets are right where the tender drops you so it would be worth asking them which bus to get to maximise both routes.

You're very welcome...Malcolm Ellul is the owner operator of Malta Film Tours.....Born and raised in Valletta and a member of the cast from season's 1 & 2 of Game Of Thrones...He was just amazing and included so many sites on his tour...Especially the Rotunda of Mosta that has the bleeding eyes portrait that in 2015 after the Vatican investigated it and proclaimed it a miracle and now refers to it as a Basilica...We were the only ones there that day as it's not usually a tourist destination. Malcolm knows Valletta as only a Maltese does.

Highly recommend that you spend the day with driver Frank of Barbarossa excursions.  He is one of the drivers for their Jeep tours.  He was born and raised on the island, spent some time in Canada, and is mostly retired.  He is delightful, very knowledgeable and proud of his home, and knows every inch of the island. He will listen to your interests and take you there. No ideas? trust him.  He made our day in Gozo one of the best of our entire 12 stop cruise.  Jeep tours are flat rate, we shared with another couple. http://www.barbarossa-excursions.com/
