zitsky Posted July 26, 2019 #1 Share Posted July 26, 2019 Trying to decide whether to go on a snorkeling excursion in mid December. Are water temps suitable for that? Maybe another non-water activity would be better.
Herfnerd Posted July 26, 2019 #2 Share Posted July 26, 2019 It'll be cold - at least for me. Ocean temps will be in the 70's. If you still want to snorkel, I'd suggest seeing if you can get a wet suit.
jaga04 Posted July 28, 2019 #3 Share Posted July 28, 2019 I've arrived in KW and gone snorkeling in mid-December for many years. The water temperature is usually mid 70s. That's too cold for some people and warm enough for others. I can tell you that most people on the boat seem fine with staying in the water for the whole trip and don't complain about the water temperature. Maybe they self-select and are a hearty bunch. I tend to get cold after about a 1/2 hour and sometimes wear my wetsuit. Air temperatures are typically mid to upper 70s that time of year, but there are sometimes "cold" spells. Also, you never know about wind and visibility at the reef, but the boat ride is nice regardless.
zitsky Posted July 28, 2019 Author #4 Share Posted July 28, 2019 Thank you for that. I appreciate the response. Maybe the boat I'm on will rent wetsuits.
keywester33 Posted July 28, 2019 #5 Share Posted July 28, 2019 I suggest you wait and see what the weather is like. December is often windy here and winds stir up the water and make visibility poor. Snorkeling here is not good at all when the visibility is poor. Pay attention to the wind forecast. You want calm winds. Anything over 10-15 mph will not offer a good experience. Any suggestions for alternate activities either in the water or on land?
Herfnerd Posted July 29, 2019 #7 Share Posted July 29, 2019 Plenty of things to do on land in KW. Walk Duval Street. Go to the Southernmost Point buoy. Butterfly Conservatory. Ernest Hemingway House. Old Time Trolley ride/tour around the island. Turman's Little White House. KW Lighthouse. But I agree that water conditions in December may not be the best. That being said, snorkeling/diving in KW, depending on where you go, is just OK to begin with - nothing like Key Largo and Islamorada, though
jaga04 Posted July 29, 2019 #8 Share Posted July 29, 2019 If it's windy and you want to be on the water, you might try a trip on one of the schooners. We usually go on the Appledore, but there are others.
zitsky Posted September 20, 2019 Author #9 Share Posted September 20, 2019 Am I likely to find wetsuits for rent in Key West or Grand Cayman (in December?)
jaga04 Posted September 21, 2019 #10 Share Posted September 21, 2019 Yes in KW. You should ask for them when you check in, before you get on the boat. Not sure in GC, but you're unlikely to need them.

cb at sea Posted October 11, 2019 #12 Share Posted October 11, 2019 You won't need a wetsuit in GC...it's the Caribbean and is warm all the time.
zitsky Posted October 11, 2019 Author #13 Share Posted October 11, 2019 What about Key West? Warm?
peter_krynicki Posted October 14, 2019 #14 Share Posted October 14, 2019 I stopped going to Key West in late November because it was too cold to snorkel, but at that time Danger Charters would provide shorty wetsuits with the cost of their trips and Sebago would rent them for $10.00 pp. You'd have to check if they still do this. Capt_BJ Posted October 16, 2019 #15 Share Posted October 16, 2019 (edited) dd shivering on a dive boat in Grand Cayman .... March it depends on your idea of cold .... we're from Florida ..... if the water in the pool is below 85 it is COLD. I only dive in the Keys in December in a full wetsuit .... not a THICK one .... but a full one. I have family from Minnesota who visit in March and jump in the pool as soon as they arrive. Pool at 79 is warmer than any lake near home. Edited October 16, 2019 by Capt_BJ
