How much currency do I need?

Recommended Posts

We're not big spenders.  How much will need based on restroom fees and/or cafes for coffee or a sweet treat.  Trinkets for the grandchildren can be on a credit card.

We're traveling early in September (2019) so any advice would be appreciated.

Might be good to know where you're travelling - many countries and many different currencies, however credit cards are widely accepted - just recommend to have a chip/pin credit card - you you can pay everything buý credit card in most places.

You might be able to find some information in this topic:

Lots

Norway is the most expensive country by far. Think London and NY prices and double them.

We are in Norway now , postage rate to the UK is 25kr that's £2-50 or $3 and world wide eg USA is 31kr that's $4 for a postcard. If you are not teetotal now become it in Norway as alcohol is prohibiting in price.

We live 25 miles outside London, so we are comparing an expensive place.

In Norway you can pay cafes, restroom, and sweat treats, transportation  and souvenirs with credit card - I never exchange to Norwegian kroner when travelling in Norway.

For a cafe you might not need chip/pin but for paying restroom you'll probably need  - highly recommended to have a credit card with chip and pin.

It costs a lot to explore Norway but certainly doesn’t require much currency! I did use some cash once three months ago when someone was having problems with their card reader. It was weird.

If you don’t have a chip-and-pin card, you may run into a few issues, but most places that require it are unstaffed and may not accept cash anyway.

I would recommend getting any cash from an ATM, since ordering it ahead from a bank often means getting larger 500 or 1000 notes that may be difficult to break at smaller establishments (since few people use cash, many places don’t keep a lot of change). Also, local banks don’t charge a fee for cash withdrawals, so you only need to worry about your own bank’s charges.
