Clamshell rental Half moon Cay

We used to rent them online before the cruises, but those were on Holland America cruises not Carnival. They also used to cost less than $15 and now they are almost $40. Well worth the price, though, if you don't want to rent a cabana as it's nice to have some shade and not have to sit on the sand. The loungers on the beach without the clamshells get taken pretty quickly, especially those close to things like food and drinks.

I believe we paid $29 in June of this year.  Well worth the money for us!  Just go to the rental hut at the left as you get to the beach.  Once you have rented them, they will give you a receipt and you can walk down the beach and give the receipt to an employee who will set up the clam shell for you.  They will stick the receipt in the top of the clam shell.

Those  clamshells can be stifling inside as there's no air flow.  And, as you can see from the photo above, you are cheek-to-jowl with hundreds of other people.

We find it much better to walk down the beach, grab some of the loungers stacked toward the end of the populated area and put them under one of the many shade trees.  We've done that on two visits to HMC and it's great!  You get shade, a breeze, a view of the ocean and quiet but you're still within walking distance of the dining area and bars.

So there are shade trees?  Do others do what you suggest or was it just you?

Yes, if you walk down the beach around cabana #12 or thereabouts, there are plenty of shade trees there.

Here's a picture shot from our cabana last year.  As you can see, the shade extends out over the beach area.
