RCCL Cannabis Policy. Where? What?

Recommended Posts

I'd rather have someone here post it. Then the next guy looking for the answer can see it without a hundred people telling them to "just call". So please, everyone, stop asking me to call.

You seek the expertise of members of this board. The consensus on this board is NO! You can not take it. You obviously are not gonna verify with the one place you can get a definitive answer (by contacting Royal directly), and you obviously are not gonna be happy until you get someone to say it's ok. I guess you can print that response (if you get it) out & take it with you. If & when you are stopped & questioned about the Marijuana on your person, you can show them the print out & say....but the "experts on Cruise Critic said it was ok".  SMH...….

While not Royal Caribbean policy...

It is illegal to take Cannabis out of Canada. so any other Royal Caribbean rules or laws are moot

https://travel.gc.ca/travelling/cannabis-and-international-travel

Leaving Canada

The legalization of cannabis in Canada did not change Canada’s border rules. Taking cannabis or any product containing cannabis across Canada’s international borders is illegal and can result in serious criminal penalties both at home and abroad.

You are correct the page on the RCCL page does not explicitly deny legal marijuana.

https://www.royalcaribbean.com/faq/questions/prohibited-items-onboard-policy

However it does prohibit illegal drugs and as it has been stated the RCCL ships sail under authority of the Bahamas where it is illegal. In most cases ignorance of the law is not a defense. It doesn't matter whether you know the laws of the Bahamas or maritime law - they apply if you sail on a RCCL ship. Additionally, you under the laws of the port the ship docks at while there.

I agree lack of knowledge is not a defense, which is why I wouldn't take anything unless I knew definitively and why I'm taking the effort to ask if anyone knows if RCCL has a policy other than the guest conduct policy which seems written before countries started making cannabis legal.

Bahamas also has a legal drinking age of 18, but even in international waters a 19 year old can't get a drink onboard so clearly they have their own policies which take precedence.

It's entirely possible they wrote the policy when cannabis was illegal everywhere and just haven't changed it yet. I get that. But with airlines allowing cannabis possession on domestic flights in Canada it's worth at least wondering if the same could be true for travel between Canadian ports by ship.

Again, please see my original post. I'm only talking about the first few stops, which are entirely within Canada.

Sounds like an answer to me

The OP is asking if anyone knows of and can show him or direct him to RCCLs written and published policy. Not opinions of CC posters and or someone sitting in RCs call center.

so I'm curious

you dont want to break any Royal Caribbean rules and that means you will be smoking it ONLY in the designated area which are outside on deck...

If you dont get any definitive answer, are you going to smoke on deck?

Not true. I would be very happy if someone could point to an actual policy that says cannabis possession between two Canadian ports was prohibited. Likewise, I would also be happy if someone could point to a policy that said "Cannabis is prohibited on all RCCL vessels".

I'm only unhappy because as far as I can tell, RCCL policy doesn't address this at all.

Just bring it on but be very low key with it and you should be alright.

I know others who have brought it every cruise and no problems, except maybe the smell(which does not last long).

They did not have a balcony and said the area out in the hall reeked.

The room steward ended up bringing them air freshener to spray...

This is if you're departing or arriving to Canada. It does not apply for domestic travel within Canada. We embark in Canada and the next 4 or 5 ports are all within Canada. Please see my original post.

It's not about what I can get away with. It's about discovering the actual policy.

If I don't get a definitive answer, I won't bring anything onboard. There is also a difference between smoking and possession. It's possible it could be allowed in your possession between Canadian ports but not allowed to be consumed onboard. That's what the airlines in Canada do.

The OP never expressed or implied he was going to bring marijuana onboard. Smoke or eat. Just wanting to see RCCLs published policy saying, it's prohibited to bring marijuana onboard any of their ships.

The problem with a cruise is that you are not totally within Canada during the entire cruise.

Sorry,  Not sure about policy.  but I would assume it is a banned item judging by other rules they have...

Is pot so important to you that you cannot go a week without?  It is legal in Nevada also but if you cross the border to a state that it is not legal in you will get arrested.  If you have to have it maybe think of taking it in food.

Royal has painted it's policy with a broad brush.  Illegal drugs and substances are forbidden.  Royal, by it's own authority, has the power to determine what is an illegal drug/substance on its vessels.

Yes. Does RCCL consider cannabis illegal when they're in a country where it's legal? That's the question here.

no, pot is not important to me at all. I'm aware that crossing a border with cannabis is illegal, this thread is about travel within the country, so to use your analogy it would be like travelling between Vegas and Reno. Edibles are not legal in Canada currently.

However, if the ship goes into international waters between port stops, which it likely does so they can open the casino, then you are violating the Canadian law that was posted several times.

I don't think you will see it in writing, but right now they consider it illegal everywhere they sail.
