sorry that wasn't meant for you. It was meant for our good CC friend who is suffering so much with leg issues. I hope you understand now.

Mitsugirly cleared it up!  And I felt like a goofball when I read it!  Sorry about the confusion.  😊

Now normally I go into a review about each deck and pictures of everything you'll find on the ship. However, we've already been on this ship and I have already taken pictures of each area, so I decided this time around to forego taking pictures of each area and just refer everyone to my previous Breakaway cruise. As far as I could tell, nothing has changed WITH THE EXCEPTION of the UPTOWN BAR & GRILL. It has changed to Margaritaville instead and you now have to pay to eat there (I think it was $14.95). I absolutely loved eating at the uptown grill. When there was a hectic rush at the buffet, you could always go up to the Uptown and eat breakfast and it was pretty amazing. There wouldn't be a lot of people up there and they had breakfast sandwiches that were amazing!

From the previous cruise:

You can find the complete tour located HERE.  Or you can find it on my Smugmug pictures located HERE.

Another reason I didn't bother to take a picture tour of the ship is this ship was the MOST CROWDED ship I have EVER experienced in my entire cruise history....EVER!! I was the worst! Like I've never seen anything like this before. It was very uncomfortable and it was nothing but a sea of people everywhere you went. You couldn't move half the time. You stood in line, back to back people just to get from one end of the ship to the other. It was terrible! It made me not want to be on the ship. I don't know if it was just because it was during the summer and that's the only ship they have cruising the Caribbean or what it was. But, I have cruised during the summer months and never experienced this. I have cruise when all the rooms were booked before and never experienced this. They did say that we were cruising at capacity.

Now, I'm going to go into this right now and hopefully I'll be able to remember most of it. If not, I might remember during the review...

This was not a very good cruise (other than the ports). I would go as far as saying it was the worse cruise experience I have had to date...for many reasons.

Everyone knows I was a loyal NCL cruiser for many years. Then I branched out and started cruising with Carnival and Royal. For the most part, I felt like there are more similarities in all 3 lines than not. Some things better with each cruise line and some things not as good. But after taking a few years off from NCL and then coming back...I have definitely noticed a lot of changes...and not for the better IMO. I don't know, maybe it was just this particular cruise but things have changed.

The service was terrible this cruise...absolutely terrible! I don't think we even met our room steward until maybe day 3 or 4 and even then I wasn't sure if I was talking to the right person. He wasn't very friendly and didn't make himself known or really talk to us like every single cruise we've ever been on in the past.

I had to ask for an ice bucket to be delivered and filled every day (which I believe happened the last time we were on NCL) but didn't get it filled every time like it should have.

The service trying to get drinks was just ridiculous. We had several instances where we were highly pissed about not being served and the bar tenders aren't pressed about giving you a drink unless you are standing there with a $5 bill in your hand flashing it at them. It was just crazy! Even trying to get a pop/soda was a task!

They no longer give you pool towels in your room. They have adopted the system that you have to go to the pool deck to check them out. They write your room number down on a paper and how many towels you have and then write it down again when you return them. It was ridiculous honestly. Anyone could walk up there and say any room number and check out towels. They didn't ask for a key card or anything. If you didn't catch them before they closed in the evening, you didn't have clean and dry towels for port the next day. Ugh! I hate this system. Also, when we returned from port and had our wet towels in the room, the room steward would take them. How do I know they are being "crossed off the list of checked out towels?"

Not being able to bring your own soda/pop on the ship now is one of the biggest turn offs for me. I'm a popaholic. I wake up to pop and go to bed with pop. But I ALWAYS purchase the pop package so it's not like I'm cheating NCL of any money. But I'd like to have a case in my room for the cruise so that when I'm in for the night I can have one if I'd like. During the evening hours there's not many places you can go to get soda. This change personally sucks for me.

The Uptown Grill being changed to a pay venue....blah. I enjoyed that place.

They no longer give you TOWEL ANIMALS!!! I know a lot of people could care less about this but my daughter enjoys this and it was real disappointing to see the look on her face when there wasn't one every night.

The food...I'm sorry but I feel that the food has went downhill. It wasn't as good this time around and I didn't really care for the selections. I would say this was the first time that I didn't eat much on this cruise at all. This has never happened to me before. Cruising=food all the time. I was barely eating and when I got a plate (or several plates to try different things) and wouldn't even be able to finish it.

There were changes in the menu at O'Sheehans....I noticed you couldn't get cheesecake anymore and I can remember I used to stop by there on the way back from picking Sakari up at the kids club, just to get a cheesecake to go for her, and they'd put it on a plate with a cover and off I'd go. Now they won't let you do any "to-go" orders and tell you to order room service, which you can't get O'Sheehans from room service.

They will not allow you to keep the key card in the room to keep electricity on when you are not in the room. In the past, the room steward would actually give you a card to keep in it, now they remove anything in the key slot when you are not there. It really ticked me off because I have no way to charge my camera batteries when they do that.

In the past, the staff was always so friendly and would say hello to you every time you'd pass by them. I seen a lot of, what looked like, unhappy staff. A lot didn't speak or would look down as you walked by. So unusual for them.

Service at O'Sheehans after the first day was just ridiculous...more like non-existent. We had to hunt people down to be served or ask for menus and such. Just plain crazy!

The baby/child water park was closed a lot. There was 2 days that it was completely roped off and closed. I'm not sure why. I know kids have accidents and they usually close things down for cleaning, but this was 2 days straight! Which meant that all those toddlers ended up in the kids pool...ugh

The adult pool was so crowded that you couldn't even sit in the shallow area that goes around the pool. We never once made it in there. Then adults started seeing that the kids pool wasn't as crowded and they started overflowing into that pool, then wanted to complain that kids were in the pool or splashing. It's their pool!

The drop water slide (my favorite) was closed the entire cruise. Both of them! How disappointing!

The cameras weren't working on the ropes course for the plank or for the zip line. Again, disappointing.

The adult area in the back has a place with water/fountains and such and it would shut down early. Last cruise it was open at night and had pretty lights in it. Now it closes way before dark and a lot of the fountains weren't even working that streamed water.

The variety of shows...wasn't much of a variety. It seemed like they had the same show playing over and over every night.

Trying to use our platinum free dinner coupons was absolutely ridiculous. Everything booked up all week long and we didn't get one of our meals (and they wouldn't make any exceptions like they did in the past) and we didn't get our free bottle of wine.

No more ship pins? If so, I sure didn't get one.

Service in the casino was pretty slow as well. I had a problem with the machine and it took almost half an hour to get help with it.

We never got to play ping pong because after a certain hour, they'd put the equipment up. Before we could play any time day or night.

Now don't get me wrong, there were good things too. I'm just saying I could see the cutbacks they have done since the last time we were on an NCL cruise and the staff just wasn't as friendly and food not as good. Just so many changes and things not working.

I have to say I left there saying I would rather be cruising on Royal or Carnival at this point if I had to experience this type of cruise again. I'm also not the only one that was experiencing this. I heard a lot of people on the ship complaining about the service and staff this time around. I didn't even buy a future cruise certificate like I normally do. I had planned on buying enough to give out as Christmas gifts this year for my kids, but decided against it after the experience we had on this cruise.

So I just wanted to put this out there before I forgot. There's probably other things too that I'll remember during the review. I was just disappointed this time around. 😞

**edit*** Oh, just forgot something else I noticed...even the latitudes chocolate covered strawberries used to be 6 on the plate and are now only 4 😕

I just returned from our cruise on the Breakaway and your assessment is spot on.  I think NCL has quit giving a cruise experience and now offers a hotel experience.  In other words, nothing special.  Also a big turn off for me and my wife was the smell of stale smoke not only in the casino but also on deck 8 by Wasabi and Shakers Cocktail bar.

I pray your broken bones heal quickly and completely.  I shattered my ankle in January and I'm still having to deal with swelling and a pain that is aggravating.

Oh my gosh, Kim!  I just came back to check up on you.  I'm so sorry you are having such a rough recovery 😢 Just a thought about you feeling cold all the time... it could be due to not moving around a lot.  Since I assume you are spending a lot of time sitting and laying down due to pain and inability to use your scooter, your blood isn't circulating through your body to warm you up.  The joint replacement patients I see for Home Health complain about being cold fairly often but when I go through their exercises and practice walking, it usually gets better.  Have you tried doing exercises with your arms and with your good leg?  Maybe if you can get the blood flowing to the unaffected limbs, it will help to warm you up?  I've been thinking about you and hope things start healing up soon!!

Hi Kim

I'm sorry you keep having these set backs. I am not a nurse (nor do I play one on tv) but you might want to look into a wound care doctor.  My mom fell & had a horrible bruise on her leg & it developed a blood clot & it started tunneling into her leg. Wound care was wonderful they had to heal her from the inside out but they have seen this before.  It seems your doctors are only concerned with the healing of your broken bones but you are having alot of side issues.

I wish you the best

Yea, it just keeps getting worse too.

Omg!!! What is that focus called?!?! Love it. Looks like a toy city!

On my camera, you put it on the diorama setting and it makes it look like a miniature setting. It's call tiltshift to photographers and before it was built into camera's like mine, photographers would buy a certain lens that would make their pictures appear like this. It distorts the depth of field and gives you a different perspective. I have always admired pictures done like this and was super excited when I discovered (years ago) that it was a built in feature on my camera. I use it a lot in my reviews. Glad you like it.

Yep, I'm so glad my Olympus Tough does. It's one of my favorite settings...especially when I'm up on the ship looking far down.

But it makes me wonder...is it actually NCL across the ships? Or is it just the Breakaway? I seem to read a lot about the Breakaway having this issue.

Sorry to hear about your ankle. That's the same time that my son in law did his (January). He's FINALLY walking on it but it still swells a lot and hurts at times.

I'm sure I'm in for a VERY long recovery with how my healing process is going at this time.

I do try to get up and move around a lot and also exercise, even when laying down. Wait, does shivering count as exercise? LOL  Just kidding but I do move my extremities a lot because I just can't stay still for long. But, I'm still having set backs...so it's getting harder to exercise the bad leg/foot now. It just never ends. 😞

I know it's been a minute since I've been on here and updated my leg/foot status and I have received several emails about it and people are concerned. I really love this caring community and the out pour of people that have reached out to me with thoughts and prayers, advice, or to just lend an ear for me to complain to. You guys are really the best!

Well, I'm sorry to say that things have gotten even worse than before. When I last updated, I had went for an emergency appointment for the increased pain and the PA took me off the pain meds and gave me Tylenol and Gabapentin. I had discussed my concern about a possible infection (that could lead to sepsis) and she mentioned doing blood work, but never gave me an order for that.

Forward to this week. Pain got so bad I just couldn't stand it anymore. Then on Wednesday morning, it was very apparent to me that (my bad side) incision had an infection. This is the side with the black skin where my bone was laying against without breaking the skin. I just knew it was going to give me issues. There was pus coming out of it and it was really red in the entire area and it looked pretty nasty. I immediately called the ortho doctor and they told me to get there right away. This time the actual surgeon took a look at me and whew...he was trying to push on the area to squeeze some out and move my foot back and forth. He's lucky I didn't have a leg/foot spasm and him end up with a swift kick in the gut. It hurt so bad!!! He was definitely concerned about the infection and also about me not having my foot in a flat position to be able to walk when it's time. Well, I could move it to that position prior to this infection but now it hurts to move it.

He ordered blood work to test my white count (a high reading would mean inflammation), sedimentation rate (reveals inflammatory activity), and reactive protein test (which measures levels to see if there is inflammation). He changed my gauze dressing back to a non-stick dressing to keep from pulling the scabs off and creating irritation (which it's still sticking with the oozing and pus but better), and put me on 2 antibiotics (amoxicillin and cirpo) for the next week. He also put me back on my pain meds and took me off the acetaminophen (but I can still take the gabapentin).

I am to follow up with him next week where he will see if there's any improvement and order another blood test to determine if the levels have changed. IF there is not improvement, he will try to IV antibiotics treatment, which would be more aggressive. He did mention admitting me...but then also said something about putting in an IV and doing the meds at home (which of course I can do on my own).

He wants me to monitor my temp during the day and keep a record. Anything over 100.2, call him. Anything over 102, go directly to the ER and he is to be called and he will come in.

IF that doesn't work....:(  He will have to open me back up, put in a wound vac, and stated that I would remain open (all the way to the hardware) until they can clear this up. He really don't want to have to do this because having an open wound just makes you more susceptible to additional infections and I'm freaking out at this point. It really upsets me that I came in the prior week complaining of the increased pain (no reduction of swelling) and asked about a blood test back then to the PA and nothing was done. This could have possibly prevented it from getting this bad had I been placed on antibiotics at that time!

Good news is...the other side is healing nicely and no pain. It's just a little dry and scaly but looking really good (and this is the side they will open up again in December...ugh).

Other good news is...my blood thinners (which would cost $880 for a 30 day supply) has been decreased to only taking them 1x a day and the mg was upped. This resulted in my meds only costing $465 for the month (with a $79 off coupon the pharmacy was so gracious to get for me) and I was a bit relieved.

Other bad news...my BWC was denied due to "too much conflict"...meaning my employer fought it saying I was done with work for the day versus my PROOF that I wasn't and still had 2 more patients to see and my proof included proof that my employer had been caught in several different lies during this process. So, I'll either have to lawyer up or try to apply for medical assistance for the crazy amount of hospital bills I have.

I still don't have anyone to manage my blood thinners...so this is an ongoing issue as well.

Other good news: I haven't had anymore blood in my urine since those 2 days and everything is cleared up...thank goodness.

So...that's my update. Thanks for the continued thoughts and prayers. I appreciate it. I will keep everyone updated as much as I can.

Thanks for the update, Kim. I've been thinking about you and hoping to hear that things were finally looking up for you. Sorry this is still not the case. 😢Hope the antibiotics help and that you don't have to be opened up. At least your other side is healing and you got your Rx cost down. Hang in there.

Thanks for the update,  we are all pulling for you.   I'm so sorry the work insurance thing is such a hassle, and that what I'm about to suggest is even a thing that people have to do - but if you started a go-fund-me I can't imagine that I'd be the only one to try to help out.  Once you were back on your feet (sorry, bad pun) you could pay it forward.

You probably already have, but put that doctor's number on your speed dial.

Kim, I am so sorry to hear that things aren't progressing the way you hoped.  I am so darn ticked off about medical professionals who don't listen to their patients - YOU knew there was something not quite right, but they pretty much ignored you.  Now things are worse.  You might need a multi-purpose lawyer - one for your BWC who can also deal with potential medical malpractice issues.

I am praying for your recovery, and hope you feel a little better each and every day.

thanks for the update.  feel so bad for you that the injury is not healing as it should.  praying that the antibiotics will take care of it and you wont have to have surgery and the open drainage.

I agree with you and the others that a lawyer is the way to go now for the workers comp.  also, if you expect to be out of work for at least a year, you could look into social security disability.  you don't have to wait a year to file for it, but the doctors would have to indicate in their records that they expect you'll be unable to work for a year.  and the way things are going for you, it may just be that long unfortunately.

glad to see you had some good news, regarding the other side of the foot, the medication costs etc.

Aww thanks for the kind words. I really appreciate it but I could never take money from others like that. I really appreciate the support and it brings tears to my eyes knowing how caring this community can be. We will get past this some day. I'm just an emotional wreck these days.

Yea same here...the medical profession is just not what it used to be when I was growing up that's for sure. Doctors are afraid to do anything for fear of being sued, prescribing medications, pushing things off on someone with a lessor degree...I just wish I would have demanded that my surgeon see me last time when I made the emergency appointment instead of settling for the PA. I know my body better than anyone else and know when something is not right. There's just so many people out there that will lie to get things they want that doctors can no longer tell if someone is telling the truth or fibbing. It's sad. I know I struggle with the same thing with a few of my patients that like to "cry wolf" and you just never know if they are telling the truth. But, we were taught in nursing school, always trust the patient and always believe their pain level...it is what they say it is! Better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks for your prayers and hubs and Sakari are doing well. It's hard for them to learn to cope without me on a lot of things but they are a really big help. I'm very stubborn and like to try to do everything for myself. I hate to be dependent on someone else and I try my best to still contribute to the household but only in "spurts" and I don't over do it. My other 3 kids have been coming by and helping me out as well. I can tell they are very worried about me.

Thanks so much. Oh my, I'm really hoping I'm not out for a year but you never know. I'm going to go stir crazy! Pshhh, my doctors are still saying I'll start to apply pressure and walk in 2 weeks. 🤣  No way would they say I would be out for a year. It's so weird that my son in law and neighbors doctors (both went to 2 other hospitals and doctors) wouldn't even allow them to put pressure on their foot until the 4-5 month mark but mine is insisting on 2 month mark...and mine is so much worse.

For those that like the gory stuff....

Here's a pic from Saturday (healing and drying up somewhat nicely I guess) then 4 days later, the infection and puss settles in (or should I say out) and you can tell that whole area turned red.

My goodness.....that doesn’t even look like a foot! Does it feel like it’s not even your own foot?

After all this with your your current employer, do you think you will return to the same place when you’re ready to go back to work?

Praying for a speedy recovery for you ❤️

Oh, Kim. Just back in town & caught up on work. I was SO hoping to hear you would finally be getting some good news. I'm so sorry you are having to go through all of this. I do think you need to find yourself an attorney with experience in Workers' Comp cases in order to fight the BWC denial, and also potentially file an unfair labor or some other suit against your employer for lying about your injury, after you had given her proof. There is your damage claim, among the pain and suffering you are going through. And don't hire a nice lawyer, you need a real SOB who will fight as hard for your rights as you do for your family.

I'm keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

Kim, like everyone else, sorry you're having to go thru this nightmare.  That is one scary looking picture and can't imagine anyone not ordering tests for infection based on strictly visuals!

I'm with you ... I can't believe they think you'll be able to bear weight and start the rehab for walking in 2 weeks! You'll be lucky if the infection is fully cleared by then and the swelling goes down enough to not be an additional painful element to your original injury.

Wishing you good vibes, juju, a little turtle love from Barbados & whatever you believe in to see you thru this!

So sorry to hear about the latest setback!!  That is sooo annoying that they didn't put you on antibiotics (or at least do a culture) when you went in the week before. I will say prayers for a steady and positive recovery.

How are your DH and Sakari??

Just experienced something like this because of no antibiotics even though the doctor knew I had problems healing when my lower legs were involved.

Kim, thanks for the update even if it isn't positive. Take care and yes, prayers to you and the family.

Kim  --  Checking in.  Sorry to hear the medical update wasn't more positive & the challenges you are having w/ WC & your Employer...  You have lots of people pulling for you.  We continue to send positive thoughts, energy & our prayers are with you.  I know you love sea life - so I thought I'd share one of my pic's.  Not your usual variety, but hope it brings a smile...
