If you are an American citizen and using your scenario of returning to same port, then NO you don't need a passport for NCL and Carnival.  There are some cruise lines which do require a passport, but that would be in their terms and conditions.

Time for me to be snarky, but this seems like a very odd question from some one who has posted 324 times and appears to have cruised before.

Each cruise and cruise line will outline the REQUIRED documentation for that cruise, so why post a question to this board?

OP,  be aware that cruise lines have different rules. The answer I provided above is the NCL rules. It will be different than the answer you will get for RCCL (where you posted the identical question). The RCCL answer is

Somehow you got an incorrect page for Royal Caribbean's requirements. Royal's website is really bad , or if you got the link from a search engine rather than directly from the website you can get bad information that way too.

Their requirements for this type of itinerary are no different than NCL's . The mass market cruise lines follow in lock step with US government regulations. It's only when you cruise on  up-market and luxury lines like Azamara, Regent Seven Seas and Oceania that you have to pay attention to differences because they typically require all passengers regardless of itinerary or citizenship to have a passport with six months remaining validity. Here are the correct requirements for Royal Caribbean's cruises taken from US ports and they're no different than NCL's for US citizens: https://www.royalcaribbean.com/faq/questions/what-travel-documents-are-required-for-cruises-from-united-states-ports .

Some cruise lines allow you to sail roundtrip as mentioned without a passport, others require a passport for all voyages.

I would, and will take our Passports to the Bahamas. My understanding is that it may be needed if for some reason you need to fly out.....like if you become a You Tube Pier Runner😮
