Bogus Charges on the Royal

How many people who get an incorrect bill in THEIR favor where they know full well they bought drinks etc and did not get charged would go to the guest service and tell them they were undercharged?  I suspect not many, but a few are probably totally honest and others figure it's their lucky day.

so you think if there is a charge that doesn't belong it should be ignored and paid anyway?😝 what is your point to the issue raised by the OP who was charged for some elses drinks just for walking by and having his medallion read.

First of all, does anyone force you to use the medallions as I am convinced that they were implemented for the convenience and increased profits for Princess.  They certainly will never do anything for your convenience.  If I cruised on Princess, I would never use the Medallions and if they tried to force me, there are lots of other lines out there that do exactly the same cruises as Princess.

Second of all, you said that you wasted valuable cruise time standing in line.  How long did you actually have to stand in line and couldn't you do it on a sea day when there is absolutely nothing to do on the ship.

DON

The use of that technology will spread throughout the cruising and resort world. You will have nowhere to go. Sorry.

Point is bills can often have mistakes in either direction.  Check your bills and report errors in either direction is the HONEST thing to do.  Just like when a clerk gives you too much change you can either put it in your pocket or you can return it just as you would expect errors in stores favor to be returned to you.

I will go on my next 4 cruises with the stupid medallion because I have to BUT I will tuck it in my RFID case except when necessary for boarding or ports and purchases otherwise they can't track me and they can't erroneously charge me for my neighbors drinks.

Whatever floats your boat.....errr I mean ship! 😀 However I still want to know what you guys do on board that makes you so fearful of being tracked? Hiding from spouse or significant other? They do not have dozens of people sitting in front of monitors watching you every move. My guess is the data gleaned will be used to determine the features of future builds and areas in existing ships. There have been erroneous charges long before the medallion  and even the cruise card.

So you won't be checking your tab daily I suppose?

I've decided to live dangerously & enjoy the convenience the Medallion provides and if it means checking my account every day, so be it.

It's easily corrected.

We just got off the Royal and the staff procedures for using the Medallion were all over the place. At the Outrigger bar they asked me to place my medallion against the reader. At Crooners it was give them your room number. In the Casino give them your room number but then they confirmed your name,  whereas at other places they seemed to take an age tapping numbers in to their screens before they could process payment. I think in time it will lead to faster service.

If they are asking for your room number, then this is new with the medallion. On non-medallion cruises, they never ask for my room number - they always ask for my folio number.

The bartenders at Crooner's didn't ask for my folio number after the first day. They just entered it from memory (or from notes they had kept). Medallion can't possibly speed up the service there.

Oh brother.  LOL.  😁.   Pass the popcorn.  Kettle corn preferred.

I'm glad they at least know they're a problem and ask questions before processing a charge.

Somehow I though only you're picture would suffice but until they tie down the false charging problem it's probably best.

I check our folio every day on my phone. It's best to catch erroneous charges right away. I've had to clear up a number of charges that were incorrect. On one cruise where I had the beverage package the Casino Bar charged me every time I ordered a drink in the Princess Theater. It was quite annoying.

We've had erroneous charges on our bill for the last couple of cruises.  With the Medallions it was easier to prove that the purchases weren't made since we weren't even on the ship when the purchases were made (and yes, they can track you anywhere on the ship with those medallions.)  Nevertheless, the Guest Services desks remains the worst link in the chain with all sorts of excuses and outright lies.

Though this happens on ships without the Medallion, too, the Medallion has created new issues. I know what the person is talking about with the iPads. The iPads display pax within range, so you might see your face along with 2-4 others on the screen. The bartender/server must make sure the correct face is tapped for charging. If paying attention, it should be super easy, but if swamped or distracted, a mistake could be made. The person who said there’s inconsistency with how the Medallion is used around the ship is also correct. You never know whether you will be asked to tap your Medallion, confirm your name or cabin number, or do nothing at all. Hopefully with time, it’ll become more consistent. Overall, I like the system a lot...when it works. 😉

Every person we ordered with asked for room number on Royal. Some also followed up with requesting name. The only time we actually tapped the medallion for payment was at the coffee bar in International Cafe and in the shop. Otherwise, we were asked room number and SOMETIMES name! DS was booked in a room with grandma but his onboard account was linked to my credit card. Whenever he went to the gelato place they asked his room number and then charged the gelato to my mom! Not a big deal for us, but might be something to consider when two couples share a room, for example!

Despite the glitches, the medallion is a great idea. I do think they have a way to go but it is heading in the right direction. The finding shipmates feature was great for the kids - they always knew where I was if they wanted to leave kids club. I also really liked the idea of being able to order drinks through the medallion - the only issue was that the selection to order was really limited so most times I went to the bar anyway!

This is certainly a step backwards.

Before the medallion, they never asked for the room number. They always used the folio number from the cruise card. Unlike the room number, the folio number was unique - DW's number was one more than mine.

Even asking for name as well as cabin number is not always enough to identify the charge correctly. Several years ago, the waiters had problems on drink charges with my brother and his son traveling in the same cabin. They had the same first and last name and the same cabin number. The folio number was unique when they used that. That is one example when cabin number, first name, and last name would not have been enough to separate the charges.

I have a credit card sized RDIF case.  I put just the quarter sized medallion in it. I just open the case when I want to use the medallion.  Closed, no one can charge me or know where I am!

Where did you purchase your RFID case from? I think I want to get one for my upcoming Princess cruise.

I don't know why this issue is different from normal life off the ship.  You check the credit card statement when it comes in or, maybe go online to review it there and make corrections.  What makes the ship issue a little more of a problem is that you don't get a receipt anymore with the exception of in the boutiques or the "garbage sale" in the MDR at noon.

We always check the Ocean Concierge and also print out the portfolio a few times during the voyage just to keep on top of things, because "stuff" happens.
