SYD airport best way to get to the hotel?

Recommended Posts

Hello!

Trying to figure out if we should pre book a shuttle or how the best way to get from the Sydney airport

to our hotel on Sussex.

The from Royal Caribbean to the airport after our cruise.

Should we pre book?  Get a taxi?  And the taxi fare searches aren't working for me.

How much should we be paying?

Hoping you can help.

Thank you

No need to book a shuttle unless you're so inclined. You can also get them on arrival, or just take a taxi. Allow about $60 AU for a taxi. There's also a train service if you prefer.

If you're going straight from the RCL ship to the airport, the easiest, and cheapest is really the train. Again, there are taxis and cruise shuttles but they're going to be dearer and not likely any quicker, and not significantly easier.

Agree with the above posts, Uber is also an option, a bit cheaper than the taxi and no need for cash as long as you have the app.

Taxis certainly do, I think most shuttles would, but can’t say about all of them.

Taxis are likely to add a surcharge if you use a credit card.

They both take credit cards.

In March this year, we took a taxi from Sydney airport to Holiday Inn, on the Rocks, close to the OPT.

Two adults, two suitcases and two rollaboards

Unfortunately, it was a wet day, during morning rush hour ! We were charged Aus$ 120 including tip. We paid cash

We were shown to taxi by despatcher at airport, so I don't think it was a con..just circumstances!

We plan to buy an Opal card at the airport and take the train to our hotel. Will use the card again during our trip.

Because taxis may get stuck in traffic, you may want to book the ship's transfer back to the airport.

Yep rush hour it will cost more, I must say $120 seems high, but taxis here charge on a combination of time and distance.

Options....

The easiest option is the train - 1.... it's reliable 2.... reasonably priced (granted we have a surcharge on it).  Sadly - if you are in peak times - you might not get a seat... that's out pathetic rail system that combines suburban trains with the airport ones.

If you are in Sussex Street - the stops are with Wynyard or Town Hall - and the airport train stops at both - so no need to change.  Just google maps and check the closest one.

Getting to the Circ Quay departure..  depending on the time... it might be easier just to walk than trying to get an Uber to navigate all of the one way streets.. road closures.. Sydney has become a maze.

At the end of the cruise - that's FAR FAR EASIER.. just walk from the Overseas Terminal over to Circular Quay - a few min walk.. and catch an Airport Train. Don't bother with a taxi from that part of town... the cost.. the time..  it's just going to be a pain in the ****  Just have an Opal card and get to the airport in about 15-20mins.

It all really depends on the time that you get out of Sydney airport.. and the relative convenience.

Sydney Airport and the surrounding areas / streets get CONGESTED... and it's getting worse. Arrival on a Sat / Sun will make it worse... the morning peaks are the worst.

I would just about have a heart attack if the taxi fare came to $120. We have often taken a taxi from the airport to either the OPT or the White Bay terminal (or vice versa). The cost has always been between $50 and $60. Although on one occasion the driver became lost trying to fine the Barangaroo terminal (Darling Harbour) and the fare was $70 on the meter. He said he would be happy with $55.

I am puzzled about the comment "including tip". There should not be a tip.

We weren't particularly happy with the metered fare either, as we had checked before flying from UK. Cost was showing about Aus$50-60 somewhere on Cruise Critic, so that's what we were expecting.

Although tipping isn't as generous in UK as some other places in the world, we do tend to offer a tip for heavy suitcases and great service. Seemed tip was gratefully received, even though we know it is not commonplace in Australia !

I suppose any pricing guides given here would not count on a really heavy traffic situation, $120 is far too much, but it is done. lesson learnt. I hope you enjoyed the rest of the visit.

We did this a couple of weeks ago.

As we had a couple of heavy suitcases, and it was evening, we got an Uber from the Airport to Hunter Street in the CBD. It was $50, the Uber arrived about 5 minutes after ordering (they tell you where to wait, it is the Priority Pick Up area, and is well signposted).

The trip took longer than estimated, as congestion getting off the motorway was really bad (due to construction the driver said) - and this was about 9pm on  a Saturday night.

When we disembarked our cruise at the OPT, we checked our bags in (flying Virgin AU) at the terminal meaning we cold spend the day in Sydney without suitcases, and we caught the train to the airport from Wynyard later in the day. The Train is super easy, and probably the cheapest for two people from the CBD.
