Nieuw Statendam's Art

Recommended Posts

I have heard so much about the artwork throughout the Statendam. Is there some sort of self-guided tour available?

I was on the December Transatlantic and gave this suggestion to the Cruise Director.  I know that, years ago, you could find Podcasts of the art on various HAL ships and referenced this with my suggestion.

The Cruise Director told me that all of the art onboard is available for purchase, so it will be constantly changing.  For that reason, they could not develop a tour.

Wow.  That is the lamest excuse ever.  How embarrassing.

I don't believe the cruise director was correct in saying all the art on board was for sale.  The art in the Art Gallery is for sale, but not all the incredible art that was commissioned and/or selected especially for the decor of the Nieuw Statendam.  That's a permanent collection.  I would suggest that they do indeed have an art tour or a podcast.  I understand that the art on board is worth over 1 million USD.    HAL finally ended the art auctions, too (art in the art gallery).    The art is great, and much of it is of course music themed.

Thanks for the feedback, folks. I wonder if there's any way I could research the Statendam's art collection in advance?

Some of the Nieuw Statendam's art I liked; some were whimsical which I thought was interesting to view; some pieces were simply "odd" in my opinion, i.e. what statement was the artist making; some I did not care for.

However, I could make the same statement about some of the art on HAL's other ships.

What the pieces of art lack on the NS, and which I do recall seeing on pieces of art on HAL's other ships, is a label that titles the work and provides a bit of information about the work.

I was way off in the estimated dollar value of the art on board Nieuw Statendam.  It’s estimated at over $4.1 Million USD.

My son and I liked the "David" who is sculptured in a translucent material, and he holds a cell phone!  We had a lively discussion about almost all of the pieces we encountered.

You can also go to halfacts.com and see a collection of photographs which show some of the major pieces onboard.  Click on Pinnacle Class at the top, scroll down to Nieuw Statendam where you'll find a link to "Art Around the Ship."  Some of the more interesting pieces are pictured.

I have heard so much about the artwork throughout the Statendam. Is there some sort of self-guided tour available?

I was on her In January and the Front desk had a pamphlet available to review only in the area of the Front desk. I suggested to the cruise director that they publish it on the onboard HAL app.

I took pictures of each page with my phone to use as I walked around. Here are some excerpts. I will post the rest on my blog soon. About 40 pages all together.

What seems to be missing on the NS is nautical themed art which a lot of the other HAL ships have.

The pamphlet doesn't even spell the name of the ship correctly! They have 'New' instead of 'Nieuw'!
Maybe they should have just gone with 'Statendam' instead???

Thanks for this information!.  We sailed on NS in April and often the art would stop me in my tracks as I went up and down staircases.

HAL used to offer a self-guided tour on each ship.  A passenger could pick up headphones and recording at the Front Desk, so he/she could take a self-paced tour through the various decks.  I haven't heard that this tour is still offered.  Does anyone know if it is?

This is a very interesting thread, thanks for posting.

I am going on the Nieuw Statendam in November and I love good art.

I am a retired high school art teacher so the art I come across while cruising on various lines is one of the highlights of my trips. I’ve cruised on a number of different lines including HAL; Oceania (Riviera); Princess etc....

About 1-1/2 years ago, my husband and I took a Caribbean cruise on the Riviera (first time on Oceania) and the art on the Riviera was/is absolutely amazing!  What was REALLY fun....the cruise activities director had a brilliant idea in that he developed an activity that involved a game of  identifying all of this ship’s artwork!  Let me explain....

Passengers were asked to locate and identify the artwork AND write down it’s creator and the year it was finished (included sculptures; paintings etc...) but the only ‘hint’ we were given was a small photo of a teenee-tiny part of that painting or piece of sculpture.  So, when we’d come across a painting (and remember; paintings could range from very small to HUGE and could be located in any of the specialty restaurants or MDR; any of a dozen landings; in an obscure corner of the casino; tucked in the corner of the library; etc..etc..)!  Many times the only part of a painting we ended up identifying turned out to be a small, 1/2” by 1/2” part of that piece of art so we really had to study each piece very carefully.  The packet of all of the small, color photo hints comprised approximately 4-5 pages-front and back.

This activity was SO much fun and really fascinating because it required that we scour every deck on the Riviera for each deck’s artwork (which was plentiful)!  By the time we finished, we had been all over the Riviera and knew every nook and cranny of it but also became thoroughly familiar with every piece of sculpture and every painting! This activity was a great, innovative way to learn the layout of the beautiful Riviera and its many works of lovely art!

From the get-go we were totally hooked and determined we’d search and identify every piece of artwork in that packet!  It took us nearly FOUR DAYS to finish and we ended up with a perfect score!

It would be a treat if HAL’s cruise director offered an activity like this on the beautiful Niew Statendam, since according to your posts, the artwork on HAL’s newer ships is amazing!  This is a great way to become more familiar with the ship and all of the artwork!

We are seriously considering a 21-day cruise in 2021 on the Niew Statendam that takes off from Amsterdam and includes the lovely fjords; Stockholm; Helsinki; St. Petersburg, etc...

We were fortunate to be on NS this January and early February (just before the dedication cruise with Oprah) and onboard was a gal from the corporate art department who was actually instrumental in locating and purchasing some of the pieces that are installed on the ship. We went on 2 of her tours (each was different as she highlighted different installations) and told a bit about the pieces, where they came from and some of the stories behind the purchases and how some of them were actually installed.  It was fascinating and I guess I thought it was going to be a “regular” part of the cruises on NS. No such luck as we were on her again in August in the Baltic and no art tours were offered. We were happy we had the opportunity this winter!!
