Silly question about toilets!

Recommended Posts

I’ve noticed that the push button on the back of toilets on cruise ships only work about half the time. This has been the same on both Ruby Princess and RCI Ovation of the Seas. In our cabin, sometimes it flushed and sometimes the button does nothing at all, only to work again minutes later. Same thing in public bathrooms with people complaining in the stalls about it not flushing, then the next person to go in gets it to flush. Is there a special secret chant or code word to get it to flush, is it on a timer delay, or is it just up to the whim of the Gods of the cruise bathrooms? 😝

When the toilet does not flush, there's something wrong with the system.  Might be in your plumbing or elsewhere.

Hopefully our resident Chief Engineer can provide more details.

But our cabin toilet flushes fine sometimes, then others it won’t. But minutes later it does. And it’s all over both ships I’ve been on. Maybe intermittent issues? I’m surprised others haven’t experienced it.

We've experienced that on several cruises.   When the clog is really bad, it can take a hour or so for the toilet to flush.  However most times the delay is just a few seconds.

We've had this happen too.

David Sedaris (writer comedian) tells a funny story, about using a restroom at a house party.

 unrelated, but nonetheless hysterical

He had to pee, and there was a huge turd stuck in the toilet.

Then someone knocked on the door.

"It" would not flush, and he did not want to get blamed.

Now what?

😎

,,,So embarrassing, to call the Chief Engineer .🙂

Push the flush button harder the second time.

Speculation: this is, as I recall, a vacuum based system. So, delays in flushing might mean the vacuum is taking awhile to re-form after flushes in toilets in that area of the ship. Maybe a breach in a seal somewhere?

OP: have you reported it?

I once had a woman in the ladies room tell me to press evenly on both sides of the oblong button.  It seems to work for me, but that could be a coincidence.  I wonder if pushing in the center doesn’t “connect “ correctly sometimes.

"One more flush and it was all over.

The thing was gone and out of my life."

I'm pretty sure this is the real reason. Only so many toilets on a line can flush at once.

Memories, years ago, written on a college dormitory restroom wall;

"Flush twice; it's a long way to the cafeteria."
